We've had a lot of stats thrown at us recently and none of them have meant a damned thing because they took only a small part of the game in isolation. The point of this game is to score more goals than the opposition and ultimately get more points than the opposition. I hate stats, they just don't show the full picture of a complex dance which is a football match. Over time, as the sample size increases, there may be broad conclusions you can draw from the raw numbers taken in concert with each other but they will never replace what you see with your own eyes. We are football fans, not mathematicians. Numbers can never replicate the depth of understanding we get from just watching a game. How do you blend together a stat on long balls played with shots on target with aerial duels won with tackles made in the defensive third with number of corners with pass completion with number of offsides with number of foul throws with number of dogs on the pitch? You can't. And yet that's what we do every time we watch a game. There is no number that can tell you the picture yet there are hundreds of thousands of fans who have assessed every little thing you have calculated and more, blended them in a way you will never be able to and reached a conclusion based on all the evidence, not just a select sample. We don't need numbers to tell us what we're seeing. I complete agree. However the numbers don't lie either, they confirm what we are seeing. Things are going south and the useless manager we have, who likes stats btw, cannot see it or more importantly do anything about it. Yes there are thousands of fans that see it and only a minority who are prepared to stand up and say anything about it. Unless of course you frequent places like this where opinion is more aligned to mine and yours shared belief we are fucking shit, up shit creak and have no paddle.

Albeit only 6 games in, we are playing worse than last season (actually and statistically) and currently sit in 16th, where we finished last season, with no Europa or extra games in the summer as an excuse. Stats: Average Goals Scored Per Game: 2011/2012 1.47 2012/2013 1.18 2013/2014 1.17 Average Goals Conceded Per Game: 2011/2012 1.34 2012/2013 1.79 2013/2014 1.83 (at this rate nearly 70 goals over a season!) All the stats are going in the wrong direction. Surely its only a matter of time.

We really could do with a point or more here, as we could from Cardiff and Sunderland away. With Liverpool (H), Chelsea (H) and Tottenham (A) in our next six games, we need some points on the board and fast. Otherwise, the end of November we could be right in the shit.
