Upson was directly replaced by Pascal Cygan, a simply terrible defender. Who has been the better player for the last 16 months, Rosicky or Bentley? I'd also say Rosicky is a better player than Bentley and certainly more suited to Arsenal's style of play. Cygan was a mistake, but that doesn't make Upson a champions league quality defender. Still never gave either of them a chance, he was prepared to give Cygan a chance even though he was some 28 year old, slow as owt ball head. From what I saw Rosicky was fabulous at Dortmund but from the 12+ months he's been at Arsenal he's nowt special. Bentley has a great first touch; good short, crisp passing and has the pace and skill to beat a man. His final ball and decision making is also better than Rosicky. I'd say he does fit in with the Arsenal style of play. I'd also assume Bentley has scored more Premiership goals than Rosicky within the same time span. Rosicky isn't clearly a level above Bentley imo, i'd probably give Bentley the edge. With Bergkamp, Pires & Ljungberg getting old and succumbing to several injuries Wenger didn't have much faith in his ability to give him a decent crack at the whip which is why he left. Bentley still had a fully flying Ljungberg and Pires ahead of him when he left, had he waited another season he probably would've got a fair chance, he was also playing as a Bergkamp type player and not a wide man when he was at Arsenal which may have hampered his chances.

Altho he was gash at Arsenal, he (Cygan) is doing alreet at Villareal.

Charity Shield would be best game if any to be moved like was done with the serie A equivalent i think it was a couple of years back between Juve & AC. Be suprised if it didn't sell out as most pre-season games over there sell out and average MLS gates are 15,000 for what is a poorer standard of football.

would have said he prefers this kind of playing in the holding role infront of back 4, a lot of Bolton's play went thru Campo and he also tried Solano in this role in pre-season.

Opinions can change and a lot can happen in a month. I admit I was skeptical but hopeful. Question: will this thread be necromancered up when he has a shite game or two? Probably but he is now part of 4 centre halfs who all have an abundance of experience in one way or another which means we have squad depth for once which is good.

thought all the back 4 were solid last night with particular praise for Cacapa and Faye. Enrique lookslike with a few games he will be a very good player. Butt was superb tonight, playing full of confidence. Seems to be a good team spirit amongst the players - everyone goes to celebrate and congratulate each other rather than just a couple of them. Everyone seems to get stuck in these days n all. Better to come i can only hope, especially if we can start picking up more points away from home.
