I love his positive, happy go lucky attitude. Unlike a lot of our players, he goes out there without any fear. Perhaps there are question marks about his work rate or defending (hard to spot unless you're actually there), but his mindset has to be good for the team. We've looked better since his arrival. Not by much, but better.
  2. I'm hugely impressed by the way Chelsea are going about things. A very positive mindset - relaxed but determined. They way they were playing the ball out from the back, despite being put under so much pressure, was exceptional. This is a very brave team.
  3. Very pleased with the win, but also frustrated. We struggle to keep hold of the ball at the best of times, and even against 10 men that was apparent. We also need a decent anchorman in midfield. Longstaff, Almiron and Willock are basically attacking players. Shelvey can't defend. Hendrick doesn't have the heart. Hayden is the best bet at the moment, but even he looks like a cross between a centre back and a centre mid. The opposition seems to get through our midfield too easily.
  4. We need to keep in the right positive mindset. Even with 10 men, West Ham are still dominating possession, and they've got the better of us at set pieces. Hopefully we'll hit them on the break a couple of times and wrap things up.
  5. Aren't the commentators supposed to be objective? They greeted both goals as though they were a tragedy.
  6. West Ham look like scoring from every set piece. They're starting to dominate possession too. Looks like we're relying on ASM
  7. Smith had some ability but that bad injury he suffered at Man U robbed him of some pace, and he was never the quickest anyway.
  8. I don't think anyone's disputing his quality as a player, or the contribution he made in previous seasons. But the question was - did we see too much of him.
  9. I've been summoning up the nerve to post that and I'm pleased I can follow someone else. Second to last season he should have been a squad player and he shouldn't have played at all in his last season. From the point of view of the development of the team, it was a bad mistake for him to continue. Sir Bob was building a good young side and Shearer should have been phased out. It didn't happen, Sir Bob lost his job, and we entered the wilderness years. And yes, I did say so at the time.

I think it's very unlikely that Manquillo would have got that goal. Murphy's touch on the ball is dodgy and likewise his positioning in defence. He's still learning the game at that level, but he shows a lot of determination. Sometimes it actually feels like he's trying too hard. I think RWB is probably his best position.
  11. Dubravka has never been great on crosses, but neither has Darlow. His chief strength is as a shot-stopper. I felt on his return he looked uncharacteristically nervous, but I think he's steadily recovering that confidence which is so vital for a keeper.
  12. I'm saying dangerous play means an indirect free kick.
  13. I don't think that's correct. It's only fouls that would otherwise have resulted in a direct free kick that get converted into pens. We should have had an indirect free kick on the edge of the goal area, with the defending team having to stand on the goal line. It's not a situation you see very often, and it often results in a goal.
  14. Well it was definitely an indirect free kick for dangerous play. No question. What I'm not sure of is whether VAR is supposed to be used for that kind of decision - ie only goals, pens, offside, and foul play. Otherwise it was as clear as anything. I'm glad we're still in it and not two down. Those whipped crosses from the left have us in all sorts of trouble. Almiron looks out of sorts. I don't suppose that remark about wanting to play for a team that battles has helped him much.
  15. Lascelles and Hayden are a bit over-rated. I'm not that bothered about their absence.

    Joelinton

What he's good at is his reading of the game, and his decision-making about what to do in possession. Trouble is, he's slow off the mark, and his first touch is dodgy. It's like his body isn't allowing him to do what he sees that he ought to do. With the pace of the Premiership, he therefore always looks vulnerable to losing the ball. I was ready to write him off a few weeks ago, but he's shown a remarkable resilience and an ability to adapt, mainly by using his strength. He is improving, because he does have both determination and brains. How far that's going to take him, I'm not sure.
  17. Wow. I think you need body armour and a bomb-proof shelter for that one. (I hope you're not kidding.) Excluding those who left to further their careers or quit because of injury, I've never understood why we didn't see more of Acuna.
  18. He looks in better trim than when he was playing.

From the clubs point of view , you have paid £40m for something, you can see there’s something in him, there was a reason we paid that much , the key needs to be found .Either the player, who never looks happy by the way needs to find it or our coaching staff need to. He’s a laughing stock in the PL I’m afraid but from a clubs point of view someone the just can’t afford to leave out. It’s a terrible situation with him . Been our best player last 2 games, grim. I think he's struggling with the extra pace of the Premiership. When put under pressure, his touch on the ball and awkward movements make him lose possession too often. If he does manage to create space with his physicality (and he's learning to do this a bit better now), then he has the footballing intelligence to link well with his team mates. One thing that I don't doubt is his character. He's handling the negative attention well, never hides and keeps trying. Lots of players would have retreated into their shells.

The usual frustrating mixture really. He lost the ball a lot, but at times he held it well and created some good situations. I think the scoring problem will always be there, because he's not a finisher, either with his head or his feet.
