I suppose in mitigation it took over a year to re-claim that Gallowgate plot, so a feasibility study on expansion maybe wasn't worth it till that point.

They've stated a feasibilities study is taking place have they not? That's probably a 6 month process to figure out practicalities for civils, structure and phasing. If we haven't heard anything by mid-Summer, I'll be concerned.

Lack of real development on training facilities on the other hand...

I think even the training facilities is understandable. It's pretty obvious they are exploring options around SJP expansion, which given the restrictions we know about will probably require engineering solutions that are unorthodox at best and potentially even world-first. Until you've made a decision on SJP or new stadium, you can't really do the training ground - as I think it's a fair assumption that if we move to a new stadium it'll be to a City-style facility with stadium, academy stadium and training ground on a single site. Once the SJP decision is made, I think it's pretty certain we'll see everything fall into place quite quickly.

I have no idea what games you watched. He was an absolute menace.

This was the most egregious example - but felt there were a number of similar instances where he was more focused on showboating etc. than doing the simple thing that would have helped Milan.

Rafael Leao would be a amazing signing imo

I left the two CL games against them thinking he was exactly the kind of player we don't need. A massive talent but very little graft and seemed more focused on creating a personal highlight reel of special moments rather than consistently providing end product to help his teammates.

  4. Would love to see over the season if the 4-2-3-1 that was tried in the second half last night works as an alternative formation for us. Sadly I suspect its success hinges on having two good passing midfielders - and with Tonali about to be out, that may well spell an end to it.

Legally speaking does he get paid during those 10 months?

Yes. There seems to be a lot of people (and some weird Italian press rumours) saying we won't pay him. But unless Tonali is waiving his right to be paid out of remarkable generosity, I highly doubt there is any way we won't be paying him. Contractually we are on the hook unless we take disciplinary action to sack him for gross misconduct. And from everything Howe has said, I can't imagine that 'doing everything to support him' involves trying to deprive him of his salary.

What jurisdiction does the Italian FA have over the Premier League or UEFA competitions?

Surely the ban would have to come from UEFA or FIFA?

The Italian FA hold Sandro Tonali's registration via his nationality. And the general agreement between the FAs of Europe is that they recognise each other bans, especially in relation to issues like this.

  7. Kind of insane that most people would probably say we've not seen the best of Isak so far this season, yet he has scored 6 goals in the PL and is the joint second top scorer in the league.

He has been here a month, if a player has been injured for 3 months you don’t need to add an extra month on to that so they can get match fit.

He’s also been on the bench the last 2 league games.

Come on, Howe has been the manager for 18 months now. Everyone should know by now that ‘match fit’ is not the same as being fit enough to play in an Eddie Howe team. We saw that with Gordon, where it has taken him 6 months to get up to standard and the point where he is used regularly.

  9. A bad night at the office but not going to get too concerned just yet. Brighton are a very good side and we just couldn’t find our rhythm tonight. If we’d closed out the 1-0 against Liverpool last week I think there would be a much fairer reaction to this performance.

The entire problem of the match (in my humble view) is Brighton forced our defensive players into playing difficult balls to the forwards because they’d shut out the midfield options, this saw us turnover the ball a lot and then Brighton were very good with it. Of course, that’s then also compounded by some sloppiness from our midfielders in the limited occasions they did get on the ball.

There are probably six teams in the league ( City, Man U, Arsenal, Liverpool, Brighton and Spurs) who have the capability to shut our midfielders down like Brighton did tonight. We’ll play the 13 other teams with very different challenges (i.e. breaking a low block). And against the other six we’ll have some games where we figure things out (like Brighton and Man U at home last season) and some games where unfortunately we’ll get a result like tonight.

We’re still a very good side and we’ll be there or thereabouts come the end of the season.

I wonder what the reaction would be if ST holders were put into a ballot for their seats and were told you had to pay £2000 for a Platinum Club seat?

If 85,000 memberships is true. The club has made around £3m for it. About £2m more than last season. In the terms of FFP it is frankly peanuts…

Most of what we do (bar front of shirt sponsor etc.) will likely be ‘FFP peanuts’ of a few million. But by building a few million at a time, you get to tens of millions, which gives you the FFP headroom. In many ways, I wish football hadn’t gone the way it has - but if we want success, driving revenue as high as possible is the way to get it.

  11. I feel like all the kicking off about ticket process is a bit people wanting to have their cake and eat it. People want us to compete for trophies. FFP is the major barrier to that. Which means we need to increase revenue. Which in turn means everything (especiallly tickets) will go up in price. Everything has a cost, and this is the price of success.

  12. An absolute giant under Bruce but now is the right time to move on. Clear he doesn’t fit with the Howe system and Barnes, Gordon, Joelinton and Isak gives us a plethora of options on the left. As has been pointed out extensively, due to amortisation this deal likely frees up substantial FFP room which will not only pay for his replacement but will also open up other Summer signings.

It’s still really weird, and going off the constant injuries it also isn’t working.

I'm assuming from his videos that he's in the south of France, in which case it's not weird at all. Muscles recover quicker in warmer conditions - so spending time somewhere that is probably circa. 10 degrees warmer on average than Newcastle makes perfect sense.

Burn simply cannot start again at LB.

Feel like the Burn hatred is grasping for a solution that doesn't exist. The worst piece of defending on our left side yesterday came for the third goal, where Targett ended up completely wrong side of McGinn which opened us up. We'd all prefer a Kieran Trippier style option on the left, but that isn't Matt Targett and Dan Burn is the best LB at this club at the moment.

What's the fastest people think we could realistically have the Gallowgate extended? (from now to completed)

The Riverside Stand at Fulham is almost done I believe and was started in Summer 2019. So that probably gives an idea of timeframe.

Hopefully not? That's stupidly late for people to get back home on the trains after.

I reckon 5pm is the earliest it'll KO and it wouldn't surprise me if it ends up being later. Not least because Man U have a 5:45pm kick-off on the Thursday in Barcelona - so I suspect it may go to a 6pm or evening kick-off to get them over 72 hours break between games.

Getting rid of Wood and not even replacing him leaves our squad stronger. Obviously replacing him would be the ideal scenario but knowing he wouldn't be involved in games any more is benefit enough. I'd rather have Maxi or someone from the academy playing than someone we absolutely know can't and won't perform at this level.

Might be the worst take I have read on here in a long time?

  18. Went for 10th, FA Cup 5th Round and League Cup Quarter Final.

Obviously the cups are hugely dependent on a draw, so I’d say that the bar for me is only getting knocked out by a good Premier League opponent.

Other things I’d like to see:

    - A couple of games against the Big 6 where we are really competitive and even if we don’t win, we play well and get a result

    - A game against a mid-table or above opponent where we really thrash them 4-0, 5-0, 5-1 etc.

    - More generally over the course of the season spend more on top in games - both in terms of possession but also creating genuine chances
