It works because we don't have a striker in the box who is capable of getting on the end of crosses consistently, so the only way to get any joy is to pass it around. If the wingers stay on the wing they get isolated, leaving the centre midfielders isolated and therefore the strikers isolated. Take our second goal vs Villa for the best example, if anything the winger opposite to Jonas should be encouraged to roam more, as Butt and Guthrie don't venture forward at all.

For Owen to drop back effectively he needs people going beyond him when he gets the ball other wise he has to pass it backwards. The reason it worked in the 433 last year was he had two players ahead of him plus usually a midfielder and a full back within 15 yards or so, the point of him dropping off isn't so he'll create it's so he can arrive late and use his anticipation to arrive on the end of things. If the players aren't getting beyond him there's no point as he won't have an outlet and the ball won't arrive anyway.

We've been defending deep the last two games, and it's much easier to do that as the defence can see everything in front of them and they act more as a barrier than anything else. The real test comes next week against a weaker team when they have to push up and attempt to intercept rather than just block, head clear etc. Still not convinced, there's a reason why we look more vulnerable at home. However Bassong looks competent.
