Michael Oliver should be fuming. A trip would have been a flick of the left leg to trip on the right leg. What happened was an extended lunge to kick the right leg. It’s a completely different challenge. I had an ankle broken in a not dissimilar challenge.

Looks to me that he initially intends to just trip the player knowing it’s a yellow. As he goes in he realises he’s got his timing slightly out and it becomes more of a lunge and not a trip. It’s a bit soft but can’t see it being overturned.

That calls for an Anchorman type show down. Hope they did travel any Tyne Tees sports get it handed to them.

Can they afford the wages for a player who can’t be a first 11 player? Do we accept a lower fee to help with this?

They made 18 fouls, 10 in the 1st half. They had 2 players booked in injury time at the end of the 1st half where the ref initially didn’t give us a foul and then ended booking Kluivert for pushing Big Jo around the face area and another player for the initial challenge he hadn’t deemed a foul. A couple of justified yellow cards earlier on would have made a difference. We were well beaten without his terrible refereeing but it didn’t help.

Awful decision making for their second. He’d just scored when we didn’t deserve to be level and instead of making sure we go in level and play a simple ball he let himself get dispossessed in front goal. Not saying we’d have won but it was a turning point.

Not going to say it was one of those games; it wasn’t. We were outplayed all game, they were better organised, played better patterns and had higher energy. Not trying to single anyone out but some observations, Murphy unaffective, Gordon truly awful (his energy and tracking back was abysmal , from the 1st minute), Isak had no service, Bruno was shocking for their second. Special mention to the ref who let them foul after foul without a booking which meant none of their players came under any pressure to stop fouling until around 65 minutes. We were well beaten, the reaction will be interesting. Can’t believe how bad we were collectively today and how nobody was able to shake the team out of it.

We need a CF who knows they’ll be 2nd choice. DCL would likely accept this but if he can stay fit he is a good CF. I’d be more than happy with him, Osula and Isak. That might change but as a strike group it looks pretty good. Much will depend on Osula’s progress.
