Can't say I'm overly pleased he'll be here that long, really. Decent squad player for now and next season maybe, but I'd have rather have just let his contract run out next year and see where we're at then. I know he can play multiple positions, but by the end of next season you'd like to think we'll be in a position where we can have better quality squad players and won't really need him.

Why not? It's not like Messi couldn't be as effective in other positions on the field. He often drops into midfield. Could easily work like this: Van Persie Messi ^ Sánchez Iniesta Xavi | Busquets Alves Abidal Puyol Piqué Valdés Messi would probably score less, but Van Persie would more than make up for that

He would play centrally for Barca, with Messi wider or in a more withdrawn role. Pep would make it work (although it remains to be seen whether he'll still be there), and Barcelona need goals to come from more players. Van Persie would provide this, and certainly would only strengthen the squad.
