The problem with “unearthing gems” is that it’s very difficult to do whilst competing at the top end of the PL and the CL. To compete at that level you virtually need all of your players to be on it at very high level, the majority of the time. You can’t have someone come in and adapt for 6-12 months, whilst playing. Brighton do the ‘unearthing gems’ thing better than anyone (to the point where it seems almost impossible to better them in that regard), but how many times have they seriously challenged to get to the elite level? Never.
