It was a big fee he went for, i don’t think he was ever in that category, although he certainly had his attributes. What worked for him here was the low expectations based on arriving for 1.5m or whatever that silly fee was. He always over delivered for us based on that.

I just don’t get the McTominay links, aside from being a bit bigger and maybe better in the tackle than Longstaff, I can’t really separate them in terms of output. Both very average players who hide from the ball a lot. It’s gonna be Joelinton, Tonali and Bruno as first choice with Anderson, Willock and Longstaff to rotate. I can live with that. A true DM would have been nice but unlikely. Unless someone is leaving.

I dunno.. PIF have their hooks into a lot now, it’s quite easy to imagine doing it as a favour first and then turning into a regular thing when they realise the atmosphere.. I’m presuming it would be a fairly big draw up here for an occasional game?

With a run of games he’s possibly the best forward in the league for overall contribution. He adds way more to general play than say someone like Haaland, he’s terrifying defences at the moment. He just needs to be managed carefully in terms of rest, and fitness. Whatever transfer fee being touted is totally irrelevant because whatever money we would get wouldn’t cover what we’d need to spend to replace him. Same for Bruno but to a slightly lesser extent.

Well yes, agree there.. which was sort of my point. I’m not saying he was worth more than 28m.. just that we could have gotten more for him when you see the other deals that were done. I can imagine that at a higher level in Saudi it was decided that NUFC would accept a lower fee to appear to be playing nice? I wonder will that still remain true this summer. Hope it after all the dodgy deals some other clubs have been making.

I don’t think it’s that clubs didn’t want him, more so that clubs are loathe to give us any sort of meaningful cash injection. Which still remains true. The previous season there were numerous press reports of PL clubs having an interest in Maxi for more than the 28m he left here for.

ASM could easily have gone for 45m.. worse players have gone for more.

Villa are playing very similar games to Spurs and have Europa to concentrate on. We have a much easier run in. Mental that I’m even considering it but when you look at the fixtures a 4 win streak while they lose points doesn’t look out of all possibility 🤷‍♂️

Fully agree. The rules around this new way haven’t even been hashed out yet. Can guarantee there’ll be some major lobbying going on. Whatever it is will be better than what’s currently in place.

It’s annoying to think we could have had him for around the 40m mark.. probably less than what West Ham paid for him. Jury is still out but could probably make an assumption that he’d have been a better signing than our Italian.

I think that’s sort of taking the piss.. but even at that, it’s not enough in one for what we’d want to be doing. I mean like some sort of financial investment house that’s operated under the trading name for the club.. or something like that. Like for example.. PIF invest in stocks.. could they not divert some of that money to the club.. who then invest in stocks and the dividends come back in throughout the year as profit we can use? It’s a long term strategy I guess.

I hated him being here but I actually liked him (if that makes sense). He was just a normal bloke with a cartoonish ego and made no apology for who or what he was. Suffered with his health for quite some time.. and it’s a shame that it was dementia that got him.. always thought he’d check out with a massive heart attack. In any case.. RIP Joe.
