Broadband - Aaaaaarg!

Since the beginning of July the internet has not been reaching the computers in the house 24/7, only about 33% of the time. There are times when it will be online for 5 minutes, followed by waiting 5 minutes for it to come back when it goes, and there are times when it will be offline for hours. Sometimes it will work for spells of three or four hours. There is no real time pattern, it happens night and day, but is generally at its worst over the weekend.

When its not working, the green internet light on our net gear wireless box is not on.

Our ISP is Eclipse, and our speed is 512K.

We've called them, andboth Eclipse and BT have claimed that there is nothing wrong at their end. At home, we have moved the wireless box around all of our phone sockets, to no improvement. Yesterday, a BT engineer came over and changed our junction box - still no improvement. Yet BT and Eclipse are insisting that nothing is wrong.

Anyone have any idea as to what the problem is?

One other thing worth mentioning is that at the time it started working badly, a green box at the end of the road containing circuitry of some sort was smashed in. BT says thats irrelevant, but is it?

Have you checked for viruses and the like?  That would be my guess, and always a good thing to check off the possibility list.

Surely a virus couldn't cause the internet to be down for three computers?

sounds like someone else (maybe a lot of people) sharing the same line from the exchange - they come on at the weekends and so your performance goes down the tubes - its rare with BT to really affect your performance but if you are right next to 9say) a University hall of residence......................

Ask them how many people are on the line................  you may be able to improve things by switching ISPprovider
