TV's as monitors

I have a Dell Inspiron 1150 laptop which I connect to my broadband through a belkin wireless router. I also have a Sony Bravia 50" LCD Projection TV which has a PC Input socket on the side so I can, in theory, use it as a monitor. When I connect it, and add a second monitor through the display box in control panel, the screen remains blank and I loose my cursor. Any ideas? Do I need to download a driver for it?

EDIT: I should add that I use an external monitor at work no problem, so the laptop has the necessary video cards etc.

The Dells we use at work have a 'Fn' key in blue text and a number of other keys that let you change stuff like brightness. On mine, Fn+F8 swaps the CRT/LCD output. I think on my old one it had a little diagram, but it did the same thing.
