Films on TV to watch

After being entirley disgusted and horrified to hear that some folk hadn't seen Terminator, Alien and other classics, I thought we should keep each other abreast of good films on free to view channels in the coming days.  So, up to the weekend...

THE FUGITIVE Today five 9pm

"I didn't kill my wife!"

"I don't care"

Great stuff

PORCO ROSSO Thursday Film4 5.15pm

Studio Ghibli (Princess Mononoke/Spirited Away) animation set in Italy about a pilot who happens to be cursed with the head of a pig. I'm at work so will miss it like I have the whole season.  Those who can, should watch.

NASHVILLE Thursday BBC4 11pm

I haven't seen it, but it's meant to be a classic.  Altman's always worth watching.  Set your videos as it's a school night.

KAGEMUSHA Friday Film4 11.40pm

Another late one.  I remember loving it but all I specifically remember about it is that a tramp looks just like the emperor and so fills in for him.  I have it all confused with Ran in my head.  Massive epic like so might be worth taping to watch on Sunday afternoon after dinner with some Ice cream, the curtains closed and the volume up.

Good idea.

Hot Shots! is on Five at 7:15, not a massive fan, but I've heard people go on about it.

Lloyd Bridges is mint.

"Of course I'm alright! Why, what have you heard?"

"Pete 'Dead Meat' Thompson is dead. So is Mo Green, Tataglia, Barzini, the heads of all the five families. It is at moments like these, my dear friends, that we must ask ourselves: "How can this not be part of some larger plan?" Do good men like Dead Meat Thompson just blink out one day like a bad bulb? I mean, one minute you're in bed with a knockout gal... or guy, and the next, you're a compost heap. Doesn't that bother any of you? Because it scares the living piss outta me!"

BADLANDS is on BBC2 at 11pm tonight.

True Romance stole EVERYTHING from this and wrapped it all around a brilliant monologue about sicillians.

I highly recommend, if you liked True Romance, that you watch this inspiration behind it.  Or if you didn't like True Romance. watch this because it's better.

I'm in a doozy of a pickle, what should I watch tomorrow night?

I've seen FERRIS BUELLER'S DAY OFF which is on E4 at 10pm and I know it's a classic.  Hate the idea of missing it when it's on, but then ESCAPE FROM NEW YORK is on ITV4 at 10pm too.  I've not seen it but it's supposed to be quality.

What to do!

As someone who doesn't get telly mags and never checks the telly, can we make this an every night thread where people post what's on tomorrow, the next day etc. with their views/ratings of the films on offer (if they've seen them). If it wasn't for this thread I'd have missed Ferris Bueller's Day Off, so cheers HF.

THE COOLER More4 10.50pm tonight

A man working in a Las Vegas casino, who can bring bad luck to anyone around him, finds his luck changing when he falls for a waitress, but his boss is not happy. An offbeat drama lifted by three outstanding performances from William H. Macy, Maria Bello and Alec Baldwin. If you haven't seen it, give it a try. It's well worth it.

Well I watched 30 minutes or so of Ferris Bueller's Day Off on E4+1 again and I have to say, I think I've watched it once too often to enjoy it like I used to. Does anyone else get like that with films? I know I do with sitcoms too.

There are some unwavering classics that I never tire of watching.  Generally comedies, but not necessarily.

I can (and do) re-watch either series of Alan Partrige or Brasseye, or Seinfeld, or The Simpsons, or Blackadder, or The Goonies, or Tremors, or Amelie, or Magnolia, or Pulp Fiction, or Once Upon A Time in The West, or Dr Strangleove, or The Life of Brian, or Spinal Tap and NEVER get bored.

It's not a long list, though I'm missing off quite a bit probably.

There's nowt good on tonight film wise.

Obviously you'll be looking forward to this though...

19:00 Today

BBC2

Sharks: Great Whites in Great Britain?

Steve Leonard investigates whether Great White sharks can really be found in British waters. He gathers together the facts and the stories, meets the experts and even has some exciting shark encounters of his own

Duration: 60mins

At a push you could watch DR NO on ITV4 at 9pm, but if you haven't seen it already you must be either 3 year old or Wullie. :winking:

I haven't seen it actually. I hate James Bond films, I've only seen one that we had to watch during a DT lesson... for some reason.

You hate James Bond films because you haven't seen the best one.  Watch it tonight at 9pm.

It's the England friendly tonight.  Obviously international friendlies are always shit, so don't bore yourself rigid watching the tiresome affair.  Watch a good film (well an average one)....

RAMBO: FIRST BLOOD PART II BBC3 9pm

Then again, you could do a football double bill, watch the match then flick over for....

THE FOOTBALL FACTORY Film4 11pm

Football fans I know have said it's quality, film fans have said it's shit.

The scene in the trailer when the interrogate him is pure class and even purer Hopper. bluecool.gif

No Hollywood classics today I'm afraid, a great double bill on Film4 though.

SECRETS AND LIES is  on at 9pm.  I've not seen it for ages but remember it as being brilliant.  A white woman who gave up her black daughter in the 60's to avoid the scandal, is reunited with her.  Hilarious and poignant.

Then at 11.40pm KAGEMUSHA is on again for those that missed it last week.

ENEMY OF THE STATE is very average and on BBC1 at 10.35pm.

It's on the night up here Bluf, can't remember if I've seen it before or not, might give it the usual 20 minutes, see if it's canny or not.

I wish I wasn't going to the match today :(....

WHAT ABOUT BOB? ITV1 1.40pm

Underrated comedy.  Bill Murray is always good for a laugh (except in Lost in Translation, and the Garfield films).

THE 'BURBS ITV1 3.25pm

Absoloute Classic.  I love this film.

JOE VERSUS THE VOLCANO BBC2 3.55pm

Average, but if you've tired of watching The 'Burbs (inconceivable tbh), give it a go.

WAG THE DOG BBC4 9.05pm

I've not seen it, but it's De Niro and Hoffman satirising Bush's war.  Has to be good.

PALE RIDER ITV4 10pm

Never going to rival his films with Leone, but you cannit beat Clint for a western.
