I love anything to do with wars whether it be in the shape of films, documentaries or books so I'm a big fan of this genre.

What war films would YOU rate as good, bad and ugly? Bad and ugly doesn't necessarily mean crap BTW, for example bad could mean really gruesome/sad and ugly could mean depressingly real etc.

War doesn't have to mean WW2 or about action etc, it could be about concentration camps or other aspects of war like recovering from a war. Civil wars etc. come into it as well, European, Americas, Asia, Africa and so on.

Anyway the reason i want all your expert views is because I'm gonna go on a war film spending spree as looking at my titles I'm in very short supply. I've seen tons but having a shit memory like I do I need my mind jogging and of course I'm hoping to find out about some as of yet unseen classics.

Deer Hunter, is De Niro in that one?

What was the film where the black American soldier would keep the heads of "gooks" in his rucksack?

Here's a few you might not have heard of:

The Hill

Paradise Now

Hell in the Pacific

Jacob's Ladder - It's got war in it!!

Whats it about though??? Scared the shit out of me...

 Me too, good isn't it!!

I could tell you what I think it's about, but that'd spoil it for those who haven't seen it yet. ;)

Sorry to be an arse but do you mean Europa, Europa?

The Big Lebowski????

Where's the war in that? I've only watched 1/2 of it like because my copy fucks up in the middle.

Also, I forgot to mention The Big Red One.

You aren't being an arse, just presumptious. bluebiggrin.gif

I mean Europa.  The Lars Von Trier film.

http://www.imdb.com/title/tt0101829/

The big lebowski is set during the Gulf war and since it's the greatest film of all time, I think it should go in any war film list.

In order:

Saving Private Ryan

Enemy at the gates

Patriot

Platoon

We were soilders

When trumpets fade

Black Hawk Down

Saving private ryan- Absolutley fantastic. The only thing that irritates me in this film is that the Americans as always are portrayed as the victims of everything. Where as the germans are all pigs.

Enemy at the gates- Anything with this much sniper action in has to be good. Good acting from Jude Law and Racheal Wiezz (spelling)

Patriot- Love the time that this film is set in. Despite me hating Mel Gibson and the way his films always make the britsh look like arseholes. I love this film and it's slightly comic humour.

Platoon- Weird film and over dramtised. However, interesting watching a realistic account of the american army at that time.

We were soilders- Mel Gibson is a prat. Good film though.

When trumpets fade- Gruesome film and probably the most realistic account of slaughtering battle. Pretty boring though.

Black Hawk Down- Did not enjoy it one bit. Despite having it on video i've only watched it a couple of times.
