everytime I open a pdf webpage, my computer slows to a crawl, and is only remedied with a restart. Task Manager doesn't show any high CPU or memory users, but the disk light lights contantly. It should be the latest reader version, the Adobe auto update runs every now and again

Try downloading a pdf to your pc and open it, you'll rule out the possibility of it being your connection.

Have a look to make sure it's only associated with one program.
