Roeder Rues Missed Chances

By Ian Willis

GLENN Roeder said his team paid the price for not putting their chances away after seeing a late goal from Yakubu sentence his side to defeat at the Riverside on Sunday.

The Magpies were well on top in the first half, and after Antoine Sibierski fluffed a great chance, Obafemi Martins then saw a shot come back off the bar with Middlesbrough goalkeeper Mark Schwarzer well beaten.

After the break, James Milner and Damien Duff also saw good openings go begging, and a header from Yakubu on 85 minutes won the game for Gareth Southgate's side.

Roeder told Newcastle World TV: "Sometimes in football you pay the price for not making the most of your chances.

"We had some glorious opportunities to score, especially in the first half, but we didn't take them.

"We kept pressing and pushing, but they have scored a winner five minutes from the end of the game and we can't do anything about it.

"It is a cruel game at times, and that just proved how important it is to put the chances away. They came back to haunt us, there's no doubt about that.

"It was a frustrating afternoon for us, and to be honest I'd have been disappointed with just a point because we did more than enough to win the game.

"We played well, particularly in the first half, but we go home with nothing."

Roeder went on: "I certainly can't fault the effort of the players, and they deserved more than that.

"We have to go back to the training ground now and pick ourselves up. We have two vital games coming up now against Portsmouth and Charlton in the next few days.

"We can lie on the canvas and wait for the count of 10, or we can get up and fight on - and that's what we will have to do now."
