I've heard the words squad control used....well read them.....i think...or a gaming phrase similar to it....A grim black and brown halo following the footsoldiers or something would be pretty awesome...though it would have to work hard not to do exactly what all the other fps / 3rd person shooters do.

Oh dear, check it now.

edit; And then link it to the "Remain calm", "Expect delays" warnings that used to be on that page....

Might be something more to this. Apparently that announcement isn't a fake though, and the genuine reveal announcement has been delayed.

1up have picked up on this.

Shit just got real. For the past few days Bungie's website Bungie.net has been counting down to a major E3 announcement to happen on Wednesday morning -- except tonight it stopped. In place of the countdown was a message from Bungie president Harold Ryan to its fans saying the announcement had been canceled.

"For the last several months, we've been building toward a reveal of something exciting that Bungie is working on. We were looking forward to sharing that with our fan community during the week of E3. However, those plans were just changed by our publisher."

"When the right time comes, we look forward to sharing this exciting announcement with you. Until then, we appreciate your continued support and patience."

So what's the story behind this cancellation? Well, it's not a joke, that's for sure -- Bungie's Luke Smith has already publicly expressed disappointment that the studio's plans got changed on them, saying it's not Bungie's style to joke like that. So far, Bungie is quiet on the reasons beyond the official announcement, but people are already speculating away.

Could Bungie be announcing multiplatform development considering it's now somewhat freed from its Microsoft ties? Could Bungie be publishing a game for a different publisher (since it didn't mention Microsoft by name in its statement)? [Ed's note: Bungie has clarified that it was indeed Microsoft]. Were there legal issues that prevented Bungie from being able to announce a new product?

Our assumption is that it likely has something to do with Microsoft's emphasis on Gears of War 2 for this year, and not mixing the message with any Bungie or Halo related products at E3. Note that Halo (Wars or otherwise), was mysteriously absent from Microsoft's press conference yesterday. It's possible that either Epic or Microsoft felt that any announcement from Bungie could have overshadowed Gears of War 2 and thus raised a stink. It wouldn't have been the first time two first person shooters were in a feud for attention at E3 -- there was lots of behind the scenes politicking at Sony two years ago for which first person shooter, Resistance or Killzone 2, would be showcased at the company's E3 press conference. Resistance was shown because it was the game that would be released alongside the system.

In any case, it's a major disappointment that we won't find out Bungie's news tomorrow, but it's certainly making for some interesting rumors and speculation. Be assured that we'll be attempting to find out more on this as soon as we can.

Ah well. I'll revive this thread in a few months then.

As upset and frustrated as we know folks are, we hope it's at least a small comfort that our fans know we share their disappointment. A metric ton of man hours went into getting something ready to show and it's disappointing to not be able to share it. But, the upside is that it's all stuff you'll still see further down the road.

As much as fans wanted to believe otherwise, this is in fact, the truth and not a cruel hoax or prank. E3 is winding down and there are no plans to make a surprise announcement later this week.

Top Questions we've received on this matter:

1. OMG! The announce was posted at 7! This is all part of the plan.

The news was broken to us shortly before 7 p.m. and we decided to keep with tradition to make a clean break.

2. Why leave the splash page up if it's not happening?

We left the splash page up for the folks who didn't see the message or were planning on tuning in the following morning before the news vanished into Bungie.net's ether.

3. But Harold Ryan is only a TESTER this has to be fake!

Harold was a tester, but assumed the position of President a while ago. Crazy Wiki's and their misinformation.

A couple of far lower priority side effects of us not making our announcement are that the Podcast we recorded and the E3: Livin' the Dream mockumentary Sketch and I were filming have hit some snags. The Podcast will be filed away in the "archives" and will be anachronistically released at a later date. The video experience, E3: Livin' the Dream, cannot be salvaged at this time
