Ref Clattenburg hit by suspension

Clattenburg is one of Britain's elite refs

Referee Mark Clattenburg has been suspended pending enquiries into reports regarding his alleged debts.

The Football Association and referees' body Professional Game Match Officials Ltd acted after allegations relating to debts of companies connected to him.

Clattenburg was set to take charge of the FA Community Shield clash between Manchester United and Portsmouth.

But the County Durham official has been replaced for Sunday's curtain-raiser to the new season by Peter Walton.

A joint statement from the FA and PGMO read: "PGMO is aware of media reports concerning alleged debts incurred by companies connected to referee Mark Clattenburg.

"It has been decided he will not officiate any matches pending enquiries into the background to these reports.

"The FA has also decided to appoint Peter Walton as referee for Sunday's FA Community Shield between Manchester United and Portsmouth in place of Mark Clattenburg."

A PGMO spokesman added: "It is in the best interests of Mark Clattenburg and the game that these reports are fully investigated and, during that time, he will not referee any matches.

"Mark Clattenburg is one of England's leading referees and we hope to resolve this matter swiftly."

Earlier this week, the Newcastle Chronicle reported that Clattenburg's company MC Electrical Retail NE Ltd has been wound up by Newcastle County Court over a £59,589 debt.

he declared his electrical contractors business bankrupt leaving a load of unpaid bills, he owes one supplier £20k. I think it was a cunning plan due to them being a limited company and this limiting his personal liability when it all went wrong.

I know this has upset a lot of people in the trade.

Wouldnt be suprised if he starts up again under another name though, he also has a number of property investments.

can't see why he should be from officiating.

The FA will be concerned that he might be influenced by financial problems to take a bung or bet on the outcome of a game, not that I'm saying he'd do anything dodgy but they'll have to be seen to act.

as far as i am lead to believe he personally does not have financial problems, its a bit of a cunnning tactic to wind up the business!

well a friend of mine said that referee's claim up to 200k a year on expenses (he knows clattenberg), that's around 4x their 60k a year salary, so it's not lyk they are short of some money

Thought Refs were on a retainer of £33k and could make about £15k in match fees?

there on 60k a year after they went professional, obviously they will need to claim expenses because they have to be all over the country but 200k ffs, makes me sick tbh

When any FA bigwig starts going on about how clean our game is here compared to Europe, I always think of Clattenburgs performance in last seasons Everton v Liverpool match and smile.

This makes me even more sure that there was something more at play than utter incompetence.

Why's he been suspended from refereeing though that's what gets me? At a time the FA and referees are begging for more referees to get involved, to be shown respect, etc. seems odd that they're suspending one of the top referees in the country for something f*ck all to do with football.

Who cares, nobody will miss him.  By all accounts he's much like Poll, a big headed pr!ck.

Jus bored and bowsing rogers profanosaurus on viz site and came across this -

clattenburg n.

Heavily-edited hardcore pornography ie where it obviously goes in, but you don't see it. Named after the hapless referee in the famous Mendes goal incident, where it obviously went in, but he didn't see it.
