A murder investigation has been launched after two bodies were discovered in a flat.

The victims were found around 4.30pm on Saturday at an upstairs flat in Croydon Road in Newcastle upon Tyne's West End.

Northumbria Police said inquiries were at an early stage and the ages and sexes of the bodies were not released.

A police spokesman said: "Scenes of crime officers, pathologists and other specialists are working to establish the circumstances and the identities of the deceased."

A silver hatchback parked close to the crime scene was loaded on to a covered police lorry as forensic scientists dressed in white paper suits looked on.

Police officers stood in the rain to guard the cordoned off terraced street to stop onlookers from getting close to the flat where the bodies were found.

Croydon Road is in the heart of an area popular with students and Asian families.

The crime scene is at the top of the road, less than 200 yards from a large Victorian primary school building.

The area is a few minutes' walk from Newcastle United's home ground where the team won a pre-season friendly 2-1 against Valencia on Saturday.

Between the General and Barrack Rd, crosses Fenham Rd. Think there's a laundrette on the junction.

He lived on Stanton St for a few months then moved to Dilston Rd.  I've just checked on google maps and Croydon Rd is right in the middle of them.  we always thought that place had the look of murder about it. it's a proper hole.

I lived on Croydon Road for a couple of years in the mid nineties.

I had my front window smashed out while I was at work and was robbed blind.

I also got into trouble with a family of radgie charvers (for wrongly accusing them of being the guilty party).

I used to be woken up by car thieves driving their stolen booty along the pavements at 3 in the morning.

My girlfriend at the time lost one of her cats, so I posted a picture of him up on lamposts.

For the next 2 weeks I had every little charver in Fenham ringing the bell with a stray kitten "This your kitten, mister?'

The area was a decentish place to live until Thatcher got rid of housing benefit for students, then a lot of students left the area to be

replaced by families from Benwell and the west end. From then on the area became radgie-central.

Still, I hope they catch the scum that did this.

Three men have been arrested on suspicion of the murder of a Chinese couple in Newcastle.

The mutilated bodies of Zhen Xing Yang and his girlfriend Xi Zhou, both 25, were found in their flat on 9 August.

The Chinese men, aged 22, 30 and 33, were arrested in raids in Newcastle and Morpeth in Northumberland on Thursday.

A man and a woman were held on suspicion of assisting an offender. A further 12 people were arrested over burglary or immigration offences.

All those arrested are described as Chinese nationals.

Det Supt Steve Wade, who is leading the investigation, said: "A series of arrests have been made in connection with the murder investigation.

"Searches at the address are currently being carried out and those arrested are being questioned throughout today.

Victim tortured

"It is early stages and we have a lot of work to do but this is a positive development.

"Both families have been informed of these developments."

A raid also took place at a property in Bournmoor, County Durham.

The couple were found dead in separate bedrooms at the downstairs Croydon Road flat by friends.

Mr Zhen was tortured for more than an hour before being stabbed to death.

Examinations also showed Miss Xi may have been asphyxiated as well as stabbed during the attack.

The couple's cat was also drowned by their killers.

The last known sighting of either of the victims alive was a CCTV image showing Miss Xi arriving home from work on 7 August.

Several witnesses reported seeing three men outside the couple's home an hour later.

Did it not come out that the couple weren't as clean as first thought?

There were allegations that they were involved in a football betting scam.

Yeah, its one of those things I had a feeling something would come out, seems bit too weird for it to just be a murder with no robbery.
