Northeners should move down south

Northerners should move to the South East if they want to improve their quality of life because regeneration policies in the North are doomed, a radical report has claimed.

Think tank Policy Exchange said a mass internal migration was the only solution to a decade of failed efforts to revive cities such as Liverpool, Manchester and Newcastle.

Admitting that their findings might be seen as "plain barmy", the report authors said that coastal cities like Liverpool and Sunderland had "lost much of their raison d'etre" with the decline of shipping.

These places had "little prospect of offering their residents the standard of living to which they aspire", the report added.

"No one is suggesting that residents should be forced to move, but we do argue that they should be told the reality of the position: regeneration, in the sense of convergence, will not happen, because it is not possible," it concluded.

It also argued that the university cities of Oxford and Cambridge were well placed to become the economic power-houses of the 21st century and should be expanded dramatically, like Liverpool and Manchester expanded in the 19th century.

The authors included Tim Leunig, a lecturer in economic history at the London School of Economics, who said: "No doubt some people will claim that these proposals are unworkable, unreasonable and perhaps plain barmy.

"But the issue is clear: current regeneration policies are failing the very people they are supposed to be helping and there is no evidence that the trend will be reversed without radical changes. Internal migration has always been an important part of a dynamic economy."

He went on: "For the last decade British politics has been dominated by ministers who represent poorer urban areas and the New Labour government has invested heavily in urban regeneration.

"A future Conservative administration more representative of suburbs and the South would most probably have a very different set of priorities."

The Government rejected the findings of the report.

"No Government has done more to turn around decades of neglect, and since 1997 cities like Manchester, Liverpool and Newcastle have benefited from thousands of new jobs, lower crime rates and better living standards thanks to our sustained commitment to regeneration, and investment in public services," said a Communities and Local Government spokesperson.

"It's alarming that this 'think tank' is labelling our great cities as 'beyond revival' and arguing that we should target less effort on them, when those areas that have received regeneration funding have shown the greatest improvements."

Actually, this is serious shit. Michael Gove, the chair of this report is a sinister Tory of the old fashioned type.

Why isn't he suggesting that perhaps the media centres, press, industry HQs etc move out of the south east? Thus creating more support centres and jobs elsewhere.

Surely this would be the sensible option. The Tories, let us not forget are the bastards who, on one hand are saying that the vast immigration of eastern Europeans is screwing

up the south-east's services, i.e. not enough school places, hospitals, water etc etc and on the other are saying they want 3 million plus Northerners to move there! How can that be?

Let's face it, the fact that all of our countries institutions are based in a corner at the bottom right hand side of our nation is odd.

The fact that people (myself included) are paid twice as much for half as much graft.

God help us all if these Public school fuckwits get within a sniff of power.

They don't.  They want the rich northerners who can afford a posh London house to move there and then if the oiks left have the cheek to ask for regeneration plans equalling even a smidgen of the London Olympics schemes then they can just say "We've told you, stop complaining and move down here!"

Think it was always those 5 depts - it was brought into question after the license fee review didn't give the BBC as much as it wanted, but it's still going ahead.

next week there will be a report saying, 'There is too much congestion in the south east, and theres a lack of building space... so the population needs to be more spread across the country.'

too many people being paid to come up with theories in put them out in the media.

Too many "intelligent" people out there that are paid a kings ransom for sitting around doing nowt and then when somebody questions what it is their getting paid for they spout shite like this.

as if the south/south east is'nt crowded enough with all the foreigners and failed asylum seekers that the useless bellends in power cant or wont do anything about now they want the rest of the country there as well.

I can't really fault what the report is saying really, for a long time now there hasn't been much prospects in the North (which is why I moved away from the area)! For all the regeneration thats taken place there is very little to show for it! Just look at all the jobs in the Chronicle on a Thursday, most of them are public sector jobs!

Yeah, exactly, except instead of the lake district we have London within a 20 minute train journey. There is housing available, there is countryside, Southend isn't too far for beach, but then who really goes to beaches in the UK? And as for stabbings etc. you won't find much serious trouble if you're not looking for it, if you're remotely intelligent you'll know not to go to certain places after certain hours etc. it's not difficult. Trains aren't too bad like, nor the roads, soon as the M1 widening's finished.
