Freak Eye Injury Setback For Star

KIERON Dyer has suffered a freak training ground eye injury that will see the Newcastle United ace back on the sidelines for a short while.

The fleet-footed Magpies star made his long-awaited comeback as a substitute in Wednesday's 3-0 Carling Cup win over Portsmouth at St. James' Park, and was looking forward to another Gallowgate run-out in Saturday's visit of Charlton Athletic.

But the England man's hopes were cruelly dashed by an unfortunate accident while training on Friday morning.

Manager Glenn Roeder told nufc.co.uk: "Kieron took a knock to his left eye on Friday morning in what can only be described as a freak accident.

"We immediately took him to see a specialist and his advice was that he needs to rest and not to take part in any contact training for at least two weeks.

"Kieron doesn't deserve such wretched luck to happen little more than a day after getting back out on the pitch against Portsmouth, when for 30 minutes he showed the kind of electric pace and ability that we know he's capable of.

"It's such cruel luck to be robbed of his services, but we've just got to stand up and be counted and move forward in a positive way, starting with Charlton on Saturday."

No doubt i'll get slated on here for saying it but can i be the first to say welcome back son, here's hoping you stay fit and get yourself back in the first team picture regularly.

No doubt people won't agree but we've really missed you.  It'll be good to have some pace in the side again

Don't get me wrong he can be a good player on his day... but how exactly have we missed him? He never plays more than a few games a season.

Anyway he'll be out again in less than 10 games, it's the Dyer cycle. We have to make the most of him while we have him until he breaks down again, because it WILL happen.

Dyer fit for the season and playing well would be welcomed in any premiership league squad.

I hope it goes well for him, but sadly, I'm not optimistic.

Yes, most people will be expecting him to collapse like a pack of cards. Usually a temple of atheism, I'm now praying for him!

I am chuffed to bits he is back but I bet we all still have that nagging doubt of how long he will last, he does make a difference when he plays though. With the ball at his feet he is probably our most direct player, he is not our qucikets player now with Martins pace but Dyer uses his pace to much better effect.

I thought putting him on the bench last night was like the time Roeder added him to the squad just for a confidence booster, seeing as he had played 65 mins of Tuesday I did not think he would get a run out unless we had got an injury.

Just thought I'd get a discussion going because everyone's opinions seem to differ on him so...

What impact do all of you envisage him having on..

a) the type of football we play (longball/short, direct/pass around, quick/slow etc.)

b) the lineup we put out each game (whose going to partner him in the center? is he going to be in the center? can he be a second striker? how about on the wing?)

c) how well we do this season (in fa cup, league cup, uefa cup and premiership. Should we use him in all those competitions or save him up for the premiership only?)

He's a cracking player and really does add so much to our team when he plays. I didn't seem the game last night and i didn't really see how he played, however, on the ITV 'highlights', i saw him make a really good run into the box and have a shot from close range. His finishing's always been shite though.

I'd drop Emre (even though i feel he's having a decent season, just an infuriating) for Dyer, as i feel the Parker-Dyer combo will work. Plus, Dyer works really well with Nobby Solano, and with Nobby, you're always guaranteed a decent ball into the box, whereas with Milner - you never know.

What the hell was our midfield line-up yesterday? It said on the teamsheet that it was N'Zogbia, Milner, Butt*, Nobby... who played where? Was Zoggy in the centre? I've only ever seen him play shite in the centre... how did he do today? Baring in mind that he's seemed to have lost all ability to cross the ball...

The midfield is looking very good all-round now that Dyer is back in the squad. I hope to God that he stays fit.

I wish he'd learn to walk so that he doesn't look like he's got a limp.  He has this way of walking which just makes him look injured.  Every time he set off on a run last night I was convinced he was struggling after it, but apparently not.  I think we should have something in place where he gives the thumbs-up to the crowd after every bit of action he's involved in to reassure us he's ok.  bluebigrazz.gif

Showed touches of looking good last night but should definately keep on the bench for the Charlton and Palermo games, bringing him on for 30mins or so in each, whilst carrying on playing for a half or so for the stiffs.

Definitely. Ease him back into the side.

On form, he adds a lot of pace and energy to the side. All his injury problems may have matured him as a person as well, so let's treat this as a new beginning.

I think he needs to be given proper rest, in the long as well as the short term. He does a lot of running, often at full pace, and I do wonder whether part of the problem was due to a kind of muscle overload.

Rossi - Martin (Duff)

Milner - N'Zogbia - Butt (Dyer) - Solano

Babayaro - Bramble - Moore - Taylor (Ramage)

Harper

N'Zogbia does very well as an attacking midfielder. Good passing and good running.

Parker didn't play. The guy in the Labrokes inside the ground said that Parker is injured. That co-incides with what Oliver said on his video blog thing yesterday.

I was told on Tuesday night that Dyer was on the bench and would come on. I was also told Parker and Carr to be rested with Saturday in mind - no mention of an injury.

Good to see him back, I really do hope he has put his injury problems behind him and that he can enjoy a good season now.

He can give us a new dimension in play from the midfield because of his dribbling and pace.

Shouldn't be rushed back though, keep him on the bench the next few games and only bring him on if we desperately need him.

I FEEL 100% AT LAST - DYER

Newcastle midfielder Kieron Dyer is hoping he has enjoyed the last of his warm welcomes back from injury.

The 27-year-old England international was applauded onto and off the pitch at St James' Park on Wednesday night as he made his long-awaited comeback from injury after six months on the sidelines.

Dyer was introduced as a 60th-minute substitute for Nicky Butt and reminded the Magpies faithful of just what a threat he can be in a superb cameo role on a rain-soaked pitch.

The former Ipswich star was delighted to have finally got some senior football under his belt as his side cruised past Portsmouth to book their place in the last 16 of the Carling Cup, and is optimistic his injury problems are finally at an end.

Dyer said: "It has been a long hard road but I never lost faith in myself, and neither did the manager or the physiotherapists.

"Now I hope to reward them by playing a full part for the rest of the season. While I was delighted at the reception I got from the fans, I have had a few like that over the years and I want this one to be the last.

"It was great to be back and I have to say I feel 100% physically right and 100% mentally right.

"I am really grateful that Glenn Roeder has given me the time to get right at a time when he has been under a bit of pressure because Premiership results have not gone our way.

"He stuck to his original plan regarding when I was going to come back even though I have been nagging away at him to bring me back earlier.

"Now it seems to have done the trick, but I hope any talk of my return does not overshadow what was truly an excellent performance by the team."

Goals from Giuseppe Rossi - his first for the club in his first senior start - and a double for Nolberto Solano eased Newcastle past Pompey, but Dyer's return was perhaps almost as welcome as a morale-boosting win.

The midfielder had not pulled on a black and white shirt since the 4-1 victory at Sunderland in April after a combination of hamstring and groin problems complicated by a medical condition.

However, the game brought back memories of the night he scored his first goal for the club in a 2-1 derby defeat by the Black Cats which was played out in torrential rain.

Dyer said: "I was thinking about that Sunderland game when I actually scored my first goal for the club on another wet and windy night.

"It would have been asking too much for another, but I nearly did."

The victory handed manager Roeder a return to former club Watford in the next round, although his attention turned immediately to Saturday's Barclays Premiership visit of struggling Charlton.

He has injury concerns over £10million striker Obafemi Martins and Butt, who both picked up groin injuries, while Shola Ameobi and Emre both remain doubts.

However, he at least knows he has a ready-made replacement for Martins after Rossi made the most of his opportunity against Portsmouth.

The 19-year-old, on loan from Manchester United, demonstrated his finishing ability with his 48th-minute strike and might have added to his tally to cap an excellent display.

The teenager said: "The conditions ruined the game, but we got our goals and it was very pleasing to get on the scoresheet.

"It was a great performance from the lads because it was a tough game. Portsmouth have some good players and a good coach, so we did very well.

"As a striker, you had to bide your time and wait for the right opportunities. We had to counterattack on their defenders' mistakes.

"I think Oba Martins and myself did a good job."

Great to see him back like! Hope he stays injury free thats all and gets plenty of games. No doubt about it that he can give any defender the run aroond.
