Would you take 17th place right now ?

Fuck that, there's nothing to be apologetic about.

No one, no matter what they voted or thought in september / december saw this.  No one.  No matter how much they want to say "I told you so".  They're full of shit if they do.  All they had were vague uncertain feelings or just a willingness to hit the summer in safety, certainly no exact details were posted to the best of my knowledge.

No one should feel bad for sticking to their guns and saying that 17th wasn't good enough at the time.

You, sir, are absolutely, 100% spot fucking on with that post.

i dont think anyone was absolutely certain we'd be in this situation of 4 points from safety with a couple of matches left. it is pretty fucking dire and we're rightly odds-on to go down. but all the signs were there in september that we would be in a relegation scrap, especially once kinnear came in. my argument for the hypothetical guarantee of 17th was that it was nailed on we werent going to do anything this season and would, at best, finish lower mid-table. since there's no real difference between 13th and 17th i would take guaranteed safety any day.

saying that i think a number of people on here grossly underestimated the trouble we were in and realisation only came a couple of games ago. looking at our football i reckon such complacency had set in amongst the players too.

FWIW there's nothing worse than 'I told you so', even if 'you' did. Especially in this context.

Been said a few times over the last couple of months, one of the things that disappoints me most about this season is how it's turned the fans on each other.

f***'s sake lads, can't you keep things civil? Some ridiculous posts here, how old are you?

I'm trying, ridiculousness is not the norm ? I'm 39 and 3/4 years old.

oh nearly 40, its all downhill after that mate.

I never claim to say I told you so, I was concerned, very concerned back then, what I take afront too, is people who openly mocked that viewpoint and still come on here now to tell us we were wrong to be concern. mind boggling really.

I know I'm not looking forward to it. I actually lied in my last post, I'm 40 next month. Born in the same year as our last major trophy success :(

Spot on, as ever Johnny. The point about the players complacency is a very good one.

Seems that unless you are the ever optimist that you are open to ridicule around here. No-one wants to see us do badly but many have held the opinion that we were heading for a fall and some just couldn't/ wouldn't see it. The rest of the country laughs at us as this is the perceived opinion of all of us.

The signs of what was possibly to come have been there from the first couple of months of Ashley's reign.

i personally dont care if we stay up, as long as shearer stays and gets min of 15m to spend.

IF that happens and we are banging in 3gaols a game in the championship, then NExt year could be alot of fun.

Look at it this way, we could survive and still be a selling club. INfact worst case scenario......shearer leaves kinnear comes back and has a transfer budget of 8m+ sales, nightmare!

Never mind worst case, I think the likely scenario is that Kinnear will be back to "spearhead" our promotion campaign in the championship. With Ameobi leading the line.  I'm not expecting next year to be fun at all, unless I can get my hands on some prozac.  Sorry if that's pessimistic, like.

Certainly, the idea of Ashley's lunatic choice of manager (that 1st and 2nd division teams wouldn't touch with a bargepole remember - never mind Championship, let alone Premier) being back in charge with a budget of millions make me feel like reaching for the sleeping pills....look what he's done already with his signings

Do people really think we survive this year?

I thought we were doomed a couple of months back, and said why - and was attacked because of it

I am devastated to be proved right.

On the other hand, you could get relegated and still be a selling club.  If Ashley opted to make a profit in the January window instead of strengthening the squad, what would be the likelihood of him splashing £15m if you're in the Championship?

Remaining a selling club is going to further disillusion an already angry set of supporters by Ashley's penny pinching and his choice of Kinnear who most think was like giving a drowning man an anvil to hold.

I think Ashley is the main reason (and Wise the secondary one) for Newcastle's predicament, not Kinnear, though I'd agree it was a lousy appointment.  Spurs were in a worse situation than Newcastle, the difference was that Levy did something about it.  Ramos went, Redknapp was brought in and he was given a fortune to buy new players, one of which (Palacios) changed the season and the mentality.  Ashley lost Keegan, brought in Kinnear, didn't spend and wound up making a profit on transfer dealings.  I still find it bewildering that Wise couldn't tell Ashley he had to spend serious money.  Wise was the DoF after all.

Right now I dont think 17th is out of reach.

If we can get the 4 points needed I think our best chance is replacing ourselves with Hull in the bottom 3.

Their coming fixtures aren't exactly easy, they've Liverpool, Villa, Stoke, Bolton and Man Utd on the final day which I to be honest I can't see them picking up too many points, if anything no wins and the maybe a draw and Stoke Bolton.

I honestly think we'll win against Pompey and we can get a win against either Boro or Fulham so that would put us on 36 points and 2 points above Hull.

Perhaps that's why Wise is no longer on the board. It's fairly obvious that he wasn't behind last window's transfer dealings. Also, as a football person, he probably wanted his team to do well -- surely he wasn't the one who decided it was more important to make a profit on transfers.

See this what annoys me, in January did anyone actually watch these players.

I figure they wanted a goal scoring midfielder and a set piece specialist, went about it in the cheapish, not thought out fashion imaginable!

which beggars the question, if wise was incharge of recruitment and retention, and doing his job properly, you'd have to think he'd have found at least one or 2 worldwide when he'd been on his jollies to brazil and other places from august-january, instead of rushing through 2 signings in the last week before the deadline because of barton/owen getting injured
