Shepherd's FourFourTwo interview

Thought I'd make a new thread for this rather than lose it in one of the roundabout arguments that are prevalent in most Freddy threads (and no doubt this one soon enough). It is a decent magazine and this is a decent issue so I'd recommend buying it anyway but I'm sure some people will be wondering what Shepherd has to say nowadays.

Interesting snippets;

- "My biggest mistake was making money readily available."

Felt he bowed down to fan and manager pressure too much which led to such funds becoming available.

- "Letting Sir Bobby Robson go was the hardest thing I had to do."

Says he wanted Sir Bobby to stay for another year to advise Shearer with the funds he eventually gave to Souness, but it wasn't his decision in the end - "A Hall decision, not a personal one."

- "Mike Ashley got the club for peanuts."

Reckons he had nothing to do with the sale, it was all done by SJH whilst he was in hospital. He didn't need the money he gained from it, wanted to only sell it to a "Geordie Ambramovich". Club was sold cheaply and the debt was manageable, doesn't like that the debt issue is always brought up.

- "I wouldn't have a manager and a director of football."

Says it doesn't work, couldn't have two people making decisions and blaming each other.

-  "Sam Allardyce would have turned it around."

Missed out on several players because of a 10 day period when the takeover was in process. Needed more than five months and would have eventually got the fans on his side.

- "I used to feel guilty when the club didn't succeed."

Believes he could not have done any more. Says we missed out on Rooney, Woodgate, Campbell, Figo and Robbie Keane. Keane was "110%" up for coming here but it was Souness who wanted Luque instead. Shepherd couldn't understand that one. He (Shepherd) always wanted proven Premiership players over risking foreign purchases, and wishes he had just gone and bought them anyway but realises you can't work that way.

Did Luque not say (when he left the club) that it was Shepherd who signed him, and he couldn't believe the money he was offered at the time, etc??

But fitting in with the rest of the stuff Souness wanted him so Shepherd got him. ;)

But Souness wnated Boa Morte, who would have cost £5m didn't he? Think Fred's selective memory is kicking in again!

So, to summarise, nothing was Freddy's fault, it was the Halls, Souness, Mike Ashley, Father Christmas and the Tooth Fairy.

Apart from the fact that he made the mistake of making money readily available. A well timed admission aimed at getting fans to remember him fondly, after a summer transfer window in which we've made a profit on players coming in and going out.

Funny, I thought BR was sacked after a few games, with Douglas Hall saying we'd have definitely been relegated.  Not really the overall behaviour of a board that was wrestling with the decision described there.  Was the Souness appointment a Hall decision as well?

Obviously Shepherd thinks right now is his best chance to look good -- he's bidding for the sympathy of the pie boycotters and associated mongs.

But why does he feel he needs to bother?

Is he about to spend the profit he made from the club on some new British footballing venture?

Or is he just one of those sad fucks who just have to have publicity whenever the opportunity presents itself?

seems like another opportunity to email that cockney journo and complain about the club again....you never know, they might even print it this time with your name on it
