Guest TPIB
Northumbria University Students Union banned the Army Officer Trianing Corps from recruiting at freshers week. Union President David Wright said It was a democratic decision, and "Our job to support our members and stand by democratic decisions that have been made" Wankers. Bet the Gay and Lesbian Society and Flat Earth Society were OK though

GM
To be fair, I have to say from my experience the biggest wankers I've ever met are the sort who enrol in the OTC at university.
Kimbo
Why would people join the army in their first week at Uni?
Decky
Why would people join the army in their first week at Uni? Was thinking that myself

Bet the Gay and Lesbian Society and Flat Earth Society were OK though I've met David Wright. He's a bit nerdy to be honest. I notice the "Socialist Party" is allowed to stand and pester me reading my paper on a Wednesday.
Stu
If it was a democratic decision, it says more about those who voted than it does about the world going mad. Does it really surprise you that students would vote that sort of thing down? Doesn't surprise me in the least. sounds like someone's been reading too much about ULU and their horrendously undemocratic decision to do the same thing to the Armed Forces (i.e. ban them from the university) last year...caused quite a stir as it was somewhat illegit. Guest Heneage
I don't quite grasp the lads explanation. How is it democratic to not allow the Army to canvas there, surely it would be best to ask Students to vote, which I was not asked to do ergo its not really democratic is it Mr Wright, its quite the opposite, its nigh dictatorship telling us whats democratic."Oh well this is democratic" "Really how come?" "Cos we said it is".
Adam
I know Mr Wright and some others in "power" at the poly, they banned the bnp for suppressing other peoples right etc, but thats exactly what they did. They are all far too power happy, as for democratic decision, I highly doubt that.
Guest Heneage
Yeah I remember getting a leaflet from Anti BNP people saying how the bloke was a Nazi but didnt state any policies that suggested so. Tbh I rarely go in the union or contribute as its pointless. Im there to learn if they want to make out like its a Society with citizens go for it, but tbh I rarely spend more time then I have to there.
Adam
Their whole no platform thing for the BNP, was that the BNP limits the voices of a minority, then they go and do the same thing....
Guest Toon Saint
Northumbria University Students Union banned the Army Officer Trianing Corps from recruiting at freshers week. Why would the Army want to recruit a bunch of layabouts anyway?
chicago_shearer
Depends on what they do. The Army recruiters in the US seem to end up going to high schools in low income areas, shopping centers etc. Doesn't seem right. No doubt telling 16-17 year olds who don't pay attention to the news about the prospects for travel, how lovely Afghanistan is this time of year, etc. I remember they had a booth set up outside the cinema showing '300' last year. HAHAHAHA I know VJ, him and Wright have pretty much the same views. I like VJ as a person but as a "politician" na.
Guest LucaAltieri
Shame... if you don't mind getting shot at then graduate careers in the forces are pretty decent.
Guest LucaAltieri
Oh, and.... I was reading a few months back that the government were going to introduce a new policy stating that if you're in the forces for 5 years or more then you're entitled to free education for life when you leave. At that stage it was a proposal, does anyone know if that actually went through?
