Can anyone explain to me why life doesn't mean a full life sentence? Why call it life, when if you are sentenced to life at say 21 you could be out by the time you are 35?

Because you get "Life" with the possibility of parole, and that's why you get out before you're dead, the years that the judge talks about is a minimum recommended sentence, but it doesn't guarantee that you'll get out after that that's up - or even that you won't get out before it is. If you get sentenced to "Life" without parole then, unless something changes, you stay in prison until you die, that hardly ever gets used though.
