Boozers and clubs - late 80s

I left Newcastle 16 years ago (after 4 fantastic years as a student), and was wondering how many of the clubs / pubs that I remember are still there, and if not, what they are called now.

Clubs; the Princess, Walkers, Studio, Julies, Rockshots, Mayfair (saw De La Soul there in 88 or 89, best gig ever)

Pubs: Inventions (opposite Haymarket metro, next to the steps that go up to the University), The Concert Bar (under the City Hall, full of students on Friday lunchtimes), Steppes (think it was on northumberland road which runs up to Northumberland Street), and also, what was the name of that bar on the corner of John Dobson Street and St Marys Place, opposite the council building? Doing my head in trying to remember.

Oh, and the Five Wand Mill in Bensham - surely that must have been levelled by now?

Also - there used to be a fantastic curry house in the Bigg Market, i *think* it was called the Rupali. The owner was really well known, I think he actually used to get mentioned in Viz quite a lot. What was his name?

Ta!

Walkers and Mayfair long gone to make way for another piece of souless modern living called the gate or something.

Not sure about Julies, not been since the mid 90s, i just presumed it was still going and Rockshots is still going to the best of my knowledge.

I really miss the Mayfair though, that was a great venue.

Luckies? (the bar opp the council building?)

Still there.  Student dive, but one of the few places you could get in when you were 14 or 15.

That's the one! That's been doing my head in trying to remember the name of that place. And you're right, the Mayfair was a fantastic venue, spent some top nights there.

I live just down from the Five Wands and it's still going.

I used to live just up from there on Osborne Terrace which at the time was rough as nails.  Didnt used to get many students drinking in the Five Wands in 1987 ;-)

Bit different from living on Osborne Ave in Jesmond the year before (I believe Osborne Ave now has lots of bars on it?).

Rockshots

The building was converted into flats about 3 years ago. That whole area is the gay area now.

Mayfair (saw De La Soul there in 88 or 89, best gig ever)

As someone's already said, it's long gone bluecry.gif replaced by The Gate (complex of bars, restaurants, multiscreen Cinema and Casino).

Pubs: Inventions (opposite Haymarket metro next to the steps that go up to the University)

The pub next to the bookshop? Its been a couple of things since Inventions. It became an Australian themed pub called Bar Oz, and is now back to its original name, The Crows Nest.

The Concert Bar (under the City Hall, full of students on Friday lunchtimes)

Its open for gigs at the City Hall, I could be wrong, but I don't think its open otherwise.

Steppes (think it was on northumberland road which runs up to Northumberland Street)

Again, its had a couple of names since then, but its still there. It did become Huxters Sports Bar, but I'm sure the name has changed again. I've only been in a couple of times. I pass it loads but don't take much notice of it.

and also, what was the name of that bar on the corner of John Dobson Street and St Marys Place, opposite the council building? Doing my head in trying to remember.

Already been said, but its Luckies and its still Luckies. I can't decide if the two for one drinks policy there is good or bad.

Also - there used to be a fantastic curry house in the Bigg Market, i *think* it was called the Rupali. The owner was really well known, I think he actually used to get mentioned in Viz quite a lot. What was his name?

Yeah, the Rupali. His name is Abdul Latif, he bought a title and became Lord Harpole. He still gets mentioned in Viz, but the Rupali's name has changed to Curry Capital.

Top stuff, Tom, ta for that. Can't believe it became Curry Capital. Sounds downmarket.

I havent been back to Newcastle since 1991 or so,  but am always telling people what a fantastic place it was to be a student. I really should make the effort to get up there.

Oh, another couple - The Trent House? The Strawberry? Surely they're unchanged.

Strawberry and the Trent House are still there unchanged, yep.

Steppes became Huxters but then became Steppes again for a while a couple of years ago (only about 6 months), before changing to its current name, The Tavern.

I'm pretty sure Julie's is still there and still called that, though I've never been in.
