the modric offer

surely this was a signal that ashley will spend big? i think im right in saying it was £20m plus and would have smashed our transfer record?

then you have .com's take on the upson interest, claiming we had shown our hand to the tune of £6m? the woodgate offer this time last year as well.

so what the fuck goes on? where does the money go? because it doesnt get spent on alternatives does it? (actually collocini was obviously signed for big money so theres the woodgate alternative.)

personally, i think its a further indication that wise has the final say, because we certainly didnt bid big on keegans targets, and if kinnears £6m form ashley and £6m to raise is owt to go by then he isnt getting much either.

i'll try wait and see how january unfolds before making my (final) decision on ashley, in the (foolish) hope of a nice surprise, but fuck me, this is a mess.

the communication for one is digusting, the lack of comment from boardroom level coupled with the fact that joe kinnear's face belongs on an armitage shanks makes for one frustrating year.

i just find it puzzling that we have offered big for players, and then as time goes on the money seems to disappear.

Yes, and it's the same signal Spurs sends out at the beginning of summer. Then they get their fans optimistic, sell some season tickets, and sell their most valuable assets with a nice profit at the end of the window. It's called business.

we spent plenty in the summer. one of the highest spending clubs in the world actually.

ashley is still fat though.

It's stinks of one big smoke screen tbh.

Tend to agree with this these days. I stuck up for Ashley for ages on the back of this 'offer' but at the end of the day bids mean nothing.

I find it impossible to believe that the plan B after missing out on Modric was buying Guthrie.

aye, and that creative midfielder/modric alternative we all knew [manager included] we desperately needed, is flying for us isnt he?

How far down the list do you go?

Modric - Turns us down

Masri - Prefers Arsenal

Aimar - Wife doesn't want to come to England

God knows who else, in the end it looks like they went for a loan signing in Nacho for a season, if he done well then sign him up but if he didn't then send him to Valencia, unfortunately for us he picked up an injury that looks like keeping him out for the season, unlucky.

Not that I think Ashley will allow any bids for the size of Modric again as he will be gone the first chance he gets to get his money back for the club.

I'd say that Guthrie was always on their 'A' list, think they had him scouted/earmarked during his Bolton loan move period.

As for the 'B' list, it was Gonzalez.

I bet you're one of those people who thought we actually wanted Wayne Rooney as well...

like booby robson, alex ferguson and wayne rooney himself?

aye, i am.

Immature, I know.

Best pornstar name ever.

But did you honestly think we had a chance of signing him?

By all accounts the Modric bid was genuine wasn't it?  ???

Modric came over with his agents and even met Keegan iirc.

Trained with us apparantly

Modric never met with us from what i read. his agent and the club rep, who happened to be brothers, were over here though and after meeting us and spurs told Modric he was going to Spurs. Modric even said he was 'a bit suprised' when he was told this. so its got nothing to do with the player making a personal choice but with the agent/club doing what is best for them money-wise.

That's right it was the Mamic brothers who chose Spurs for him. :nods:

But surely, if you are going to bid then you have the money, what would have happened if he'd agreed to join us? I'm not picking a side and saying you are wrong or Ashley's bullshitting. But the idea of making an offer is that you will actually come through because were we not the team who bid first and spoke to him first? I hardly think Ashley wanted to lose Modric.
