McCormick
Due to certain unfortunate circumstances I'm having to pay for my younger brother's University, if you lot could help me find him something closer to home so he can have family nearby while i'm working abroad, it would really be appreciated. I guess what i'm requesting is a critique of the various universities in the area (I know next to nothing about unis nowadays) and how far away they from Darlington. He's doing some sort of business thing, if that helps. Edit: Oh and wtf is this new point system shite?
Ashley17
I do Business Studies at Northumbria (currently doing a year's work as part of the 4 year course) and it's very good. The new building is used for Business which is also a bonus. Plenty of accomodation nearby of a decent quality, and it's half an hour-ish on a train to Darlo if needs be (or if he wants to live at home) Newcastle is pretty good for Business, don't offer as many courses as Northumbria but still pretty good. No idea about their accomodation though. Sunderland - Well, it's the worst of the selection obviously but it's okay for Business, has similiar ties to Northumbria in terms of Business links for placements (if he wants to do one) but has the notable drawback of being in Sunderland. Also I wouldn't know how to get there from Darlington unless he has a car. Durham - Unless he's a boy genius, I wouldn't even entertain this idea. However, they do their business courses at Stockton, which is nearer to Darlington. Teeside - Again, closer to home for him but I don't know anything about the uni. I think Ronaldo off here goes there if I'm not mistaken

Not really, he did superbly in his o'levels (all A's) but he's gotten cocky and his results in the past two years have been fairly average at best. Northumbria seems ideal tbh, sorry for being a bit of a nosy prick but what were the results that got you accepted? I'm at a position in the company where i can obtain transcripts saying the lad got some work experience which i hope helps as well.
Ashley17
I got ABC and a further C at AS Level which got me over the 320 points I needed. That got me onto a 4 year sandwich course (sandwich meaning 4 year coruse where one year is a year in work - sorry if that's patronising but just in case you didn't know) I don't know what the new points system is but the old one was: A = 120 points B = 100 C = 80 And if the grade was up to AS Level you halved that. I didn't have to do an interview or anything and I don't suppose they've implemented it for Business courses, basically as long as his personal statements show he's done more than go to school/sixth form he should be fine. Work Experience is useful but it's not the be all and end all, it might come in to play if he applies for a placement but otherwise I wouldn't worry. Guest LucaAltieri
Teeside - Again, closer to home for him but I don't know anything about the uni. I think Ronaldo off here goes there if I'm not mistaken Know a few people that went there. They liked it... not that they have much to compare it to. In terms of getting to and from Darlington it's perfect, though. Plenty of trains.
AyeDubbleYoo
I went to Durham and it was really good, a lot of posh kids of course and not the most modern courses... but it looks good on the CV. Did my Masters at Teesside and had a decent time, I'd say they're better for modern courses like Multimedia etc, but I wouldn't want to go there as an undergraduate - three years in the Boro would be too much. Be as patronising as you want All useful info though thanks, would a C C C/D and B at AS level be good enough though? Seeing as that's what, realistically, he's going to get. Yeah teeside seems a great choice in terms of location and ease of passage, but I'm just a bit worried about the quality of learning; and at the end of the day that's what's most important. Ashley17
He will only get one AS grade - when I did my A Levels I picked 4 courses for the 2 years of sixth form/college and you drop one you don't like at the end of the first year. So you end up with 3 A Level grades and an AS grade. There are complications of course (some people take all 4 to A Level, some people really hate things and have to drop 2 and take on an extra AS...but that's not important) Every course has a different requirement in terms of points. You can check them in either a prospectus (big book for each Uni with all the courses in) or online at the uni's website usually. My course was 320 points but I know people who got on with about 260, it's really dependant on demand and also the personal statement and stuff like that (i.e. they might like the look of your achievements outside of the academic world) Without sounding like a pompous tit, Northumbria and Newcastle will have higher barriers for entry than Sunderland and Teeside. With Business courses it really could be anything between about 240 (3 C's) and 360 (3 A's) - courses are split into modules and if some of these modules include things like Maths then it will push the barriers up. Make sense?
ChezGiven
Sounds like Stockton college, Durham uni would be ideal. Its not that hard getting in. They let me in anyway.

But yeah all of that does make sense.
MW
3 Bs are needed to get you into Durham Business school. 20 minute train for Darlignton, pretty regular.

Look into getting a bursary if he goes to a local uni - a lot of local uni's will subsidise some of the fees if you're from nearby.
