I can afford up to £430. I don't need it to play games on. Don't you need 3GB RAM for Vista to run well?

I've already got a decent desktop. I can't really justify spending more than £430 on a laptop. The laptop is just to connect to the internet, play DVDs, music, send emails and the like. Nothing fancy.

I'm a bit rusty when it comes to knowing what a decent processor is in a laptop. Like I said above, I'd heard you need 3GB to run Vista well. I've seen a review of a 4GB laptop that gets a Vista performance score of 4.0 so God knows what a 1 or 2 GB laptop get.

Above my £430 budget unfortunately.

I'm considering: -

Dell 1545 Laptop £399.00

    *  Intel Core 2 Duo T5800

    * (2GHz, 800MHz FSB, 2MB Cache)

    * Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium

    * 3GB Memory

    * 250GB Hard Drive

and

HP G60-118EM Laptop £399.99

    *  Intel Pentium Processor T3200

    * (2 GHz, 667 MHz, 1MB Cache)

    * Genuine Windows Vista ® Home Premium

    * 3 GB memory

    * 250 GB Hard drive

ASDA Aberdeen.  Still says 350 in store but if you ask they are £300. Limited stock I'm led to believe.

Powerful AMD Athlon® X2 QL60 1.9 dual core processor.

Not as powerful as the Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T5800 (2GHz, 800MHz FSB, 2MB Cache) in the PC World one though. Shame they don't have any in stock.

Thanks for the information though.

Does anyone know which is the better processor from these two: -

Intel Pentium Dual Core T3200 (2.0 GHz and 667 MHz FSB, 1MB Cache)

OR

Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 (2GHz, 800MHz FSB, 2MB Cache)

Looking at http://www.cpubenchmark.net/ the T3200 ranks higher than the T5800 but I don't know if that takes the 2MB Cache into account.

The second one has higher numbers across the board, so I'd get that. :blush:

Thanks for the help. I also found another Processor Benchmark website which people may find useful: -

http://www.notebookcheck.net/Mobile-Processors-Benchmarklist.2436.0.html

It confirms that the Intel Core 2 Duo T5800 (2GHz, 800MHz FSB, 2MB Cache) is the better processor.

Although the http://www.cpubenchmark.net/cpu_list.php says the Intel Pentium Dual Core T3200 (2.0 GHz and 667 MHz FSB, 1MB Cache) gets better results.

I think I'll get the T5800. Both the laptops I'm looking at cost the same. It's so confusing!

Edit - I've bought the Dell 1545 Laptop £399.00

    *  Intel Core 2 Duo T5800

    * (2GHz, 800MHz FSB, 2MB Cache)

    * Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium

    * 3GB Memory

    * 250GB Hard Drive

Please don't post any replies to this thread with any amazing bargains now I've bought a laptop. I'd find it depressing if there was a better deal than the one I bought.

Look at the one in my post above yours. That's the one I've just bought after quite a bit of research. It seems to be the best spec out there for (just) under £400.
