Clay
Hopefully someone on here will be able to help. About 6 months ago my PC wouldn't turn on and today a mate came around to try and fix it... we found out that i was my usb port (which i crushed the night before ) was shorting the PC out so it wouldn't turn on. Fixed that and now it turns on but it doesn't display on the monitor and it doesn't beep (I can't remember if it beeped in the first place) Stipped the PC down to just the CPU and Memory and replaced everything bit by bit and still no change. It's not the PSU as that powers everything including the speakers... and i've tried resetting the CMOS and still nothing.. I'm just wondering if anyone can think of something i'm missing? Just seems strange how it worked the night before the USB problem and now that's sorted it has other problems even though t's just been sitting there untouched for months. Guest Lazlo
Bummer. If it still doesn't post in bios you still have a major problem. There's a chance you've done damage to either your mobo or psu in the first instance when the usb shorted. Look at it this way, if you've stripped everything and you're sure the usb is ok now it's either psu or mobo because that's all you have connected. Don't rule out psu as it might have just gone down on 1 rail leaving everything else powered. It should beep once btw on startup. Without seeing it, i would say your motherboard is borked. Was the usb an external one (front panel) or one on the back (connected to the mobo) ?
Clay
Cheers Laz, my mates going to pop round with his spare PSU today to try that and see if that's the problem...
Clay
Didn't work.. What's the best place for buying PC parts? My budget is £200 max and i have the case although it's not very big so a smaller size motherboard will probably be best, also wont need a HDD as i've already got an 80 gig one (not sata) and a 1tb external. I've tried overclockers.co.uk but it still seems a little pricey. Hoping to build something just for internet browsing and downloading etc... obviously play video files in good quality and process programmes at decent speeds.. not bothered about gaming at all. Guest Lazlo
I use Novatech quite a bit. www.novatech.co.uk http://www.maplin.co.uk/Module.aspx?ModuleNo=228209&&source=14&doy=24m1 That sort of thing ?

That bundle looks pretty good like.. only thing is i'd have to fork out for a new PSU more than likely as mine's only 230w and a new case as mines smallish.. Tempted to get it as it's got gfx and sound built into the mobo.
Clay
Actually i think i'm going to get that Motherboard bundle Lazlo.. What standard of games do you think that would play using the built in GFX? Also would what kind of PSU would i be looking at to run that motherboard? also would i be able to eventually buy a £200+ GFX card and put it in that mobo? Dokko
If it's not posting (the beep) take the memory out. Put one dimm in, and try that, then try the other, or however many you've got. Also try different slots. If possible try some other memory thet's not even been in the computer, as to me, it sounds like a memory error.
Clay
Yeah i've tried that and no luck Tbf.. i'll just start from scratch, the PC is quite old and only had 256mb of ram anyway and a 1.2 ghz processing speed.. Going halfies on that Mobo that Lazlo posted for my birthday, just need to know if it'll be good enough for a few years of upgrades.

Ah well, its shite then, might as well get some new stuff in that case. (if the stick is 256mb, and that's all you got, i stil think its that btw as i've had this exact probelm before with a new build)
Chrissy Bee
You'll find most motherboards only come with one IDE connection now, so you'll have trouble connecting up both a DVD drive and your old hard disk (unless you find some dock to fit a hard disk in a 5'1/4" drive bay). You're better off buying a new HD than stretching to a more expensive mobo that includes a second port.

It'll not run much and it's best to have a psu around 500W. As it happens i have a 500w Psu and a nvidia 7800gt which you can have for £20 if you're interested. The psu is a pc world Jeantech but it was about £60. Here's a pic http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v172/crnppscls/SANY15491.jpg
