'Red Dwarf' crew to return to Earth

The Red Dwarf crew will be returning to Earth when the cult sci-fi show returns to TV later this year.

Red Dwarf: Return To Earth will reportedly see last human Dave Lister (Craig Charles) achieve his life-long goal of touching down on his home planet.

The two-part special, which has been commissioned by digital channel Dave, will reunite original cast members Charles, Danny John-Jules, Chris Barrie and Robert Llewellyn one decade after the iconic comedy ended.

Speaking to The Sun, Barrie confirmed the plot, saying: "Yes, Lister’s dream is about to come true. But like everything in Red Dwarf, nothing is straightforward."

Written and directed by Red Dwarf creator Doug Naylor, the special episodes will kick off a special Easter weekend of Red Dwarf on Dave.

Return To Earth will be followed by Red Dwarf: Unplugged, which has been described as a "no holds barred" episode with no sets, no effects and no autocue. The weekend will close with Red Dwarf: The Making Of Back To Earth, which will give viewers a behind-the-scenes look at the new production.

The programme ran from 1988 until 1999, winning numerous awards including an international Emmy. It has sold more than seven million DVDs and videos across the world and at its peak, pulled in eight million viewers.

Loved up until season 3, didn't enjoy it as much after then. Will still find a way to watch this though.

Series 6 was the best for me.

Psirens, Legion, Gunmen of the Apocalypse, Rimmerworld, Out of Time. 5/6 of the top ten episodes right there for me.

Season 7 started strong as well, Tikka to Ride & Stoke me a Clipper were great, then Kochanski came in and it went shit.

I didn't enjoy season 4 much, and only bothered with half of season 5 for the same reason. Sounds like i stopped just to soon, might go check them out if I can find them on DVD

If she is in it, it will probably annoy me.

Bad casting.

Hope they don't fuck this up, in its day Red Dwarf gave me and many of my friends and family laughs for years.  Series 1 to 6 was brilliant.

I think you did. Season 6 probably its peak, funny, witty, clever, and on form, brilliant lines and gags galore, a perfect format....totally ruined by Rimmer leaving and Kocuntski coming in.

Coronation Street? I hope to f***ing god they know what they're doing.

 at Rimmer's hair. He's aged a bit like!

jesus! Rimmer is looking old now.  Forget how many years have passed since the show first came to our screens.

Lol. All my hair has fallen out since Red Dwarf first started, and I was only just in my teens then.

Apparently Steve McDonald has been cast as Steve McDonald.

And as well as playing Lister, Craig Charles will also multiple role play as his Corrie character Lloyd apparently.

Was just watching it on Dave last night for the first time in ages, absolutely class.

Glad it'll be back, however briefly, one of my favourite programmes growing up.

Did you see that. Some great one liners.

"Its about as plain as a Bulgarian Pin-Up."

That line was the exact one that killed me as well, Rimmer was on fire.

"Back to Earth" two part special and special highlights show OUT.

"Back to Earth" three part special IN.

So, yes, it's true. Red Dwarf: Unplugged - a planned half-hour of the lads playing classic scenes in a deliberately ramshackle format - is out, and Back to Earth - Part Three is in!

This all started with the script. Doug Naylor had, as ever, written Back to Earth's two-part story a little long - deliberately so, in fact, in preparation for a possible 'Xtended cut' on DVD.

Yet as the script evolved, it soon became clear that every scene in the show was necessary. There was no padding. And with later drafts maximising on ideas hinted at in the first versions, two 30-minute scripts (each already intended to be around 23 minutes, after editing, for broadcast on the a station that includes commercial breaks) slowly grew into a story that ran a total of around 70 minutes.

It may not seem a huge a difference, but the need to tell an epic story at the appropriate pace, plus the logistical demands of shooting so much material under a tight schedule, meant that Grant Naylor Productions and Dave have agreed a change of plans.

The two cast-and-crew days originally booked for Red Dwarf: Unplugged (one for script and tech rehearsal, one for shooting) have become the final two days of the Back to Earth production. This will be entirely location work, as the production will already have left the shooting stage - Studio D at Shepperton - and dismantled the sets.

While all this might seem unusual, Red Dwarf scripts have always been produced against the time pressure of production, feeding off the energy of impending production, not to mention the bright ideas sparked by having cast and crew close to hand.

In the case of Back to Earth the remarkable thing is how cleanly and deliberately the three parts came together. Careful rewriting has tidied up the structure, but this was always a three-part story cramming itself into two episodes. Now... well, now it can breathe.

Big Suze is a new hologram in this

Who's annoyed Rimmer this time? We reveal an exclusive image of a new character.

Red Dwarf News: New character revealed!

This exclusive image reveals for the first time the nature of guest-star Sophie Winkelman's character. Named Katerina, she's a surprising addition to the crew - a resurrected hologram of a Red Dwarf science officer intent on replacing Rimmer.

That's right - she's Arnold's nemesis!

Craig Charles looks pretty much the same and I'm quite shocked at how alike Danny John-Jules looks this time round.

Robert Llewellyn seems to have had his Kryten costume modernised and made better (I watching Series 2 again the other night when he was first in with that really basic 'robot' look ) but Chris Barrie just looks like an old man now. His hair's nearly gone!
