Robinho held for alleged sex assault

Wednesday, 28 January 2009

Manchester City's Brazilian superstar Robinho has been arrested and released on bail over an allegation of sexual assault, it was reported last night.

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said that officers were investigating an allegation of sexual assault which took place at a nightclub in Leeds a number of weeks ago, and that an arrest had been made in the past few days. He said: "There is an investigation ongoing regarding an incident in a nightclub in Leeds. A man has been arrested and questioned and has been given police bail."

Manchester City refused to confirm or deny the allegation, but it is understood that Robinho, 25, did not report for training yesterday. A separate source confirmed that the player had been questioned.

It recently emerged that the Brazilian, who signed for the Premier League club in September last year for a British record transfer fee of £32.5m, would be fined two weeks' wages – believed to be around £200,000 – after he left a training camp in Tenerife without permission.

In 2007, Robinho and his fellow Brazilian international Ronaldinho were at the centre of a controversy when they were both dropped for the upcoming weekend by their league clubs after they had missed their flights from Brazil back to Spain. Reports by a Brazilian newspaper, O Globo, described both players partying with other teammates into the early morning hours at a popular Rio de Janeiro nightclub, Catwalk, as they celebrated Brazil's 5-0 win over Ecuador the day before.

Robinho signed for Manchester City on the last day of the transfer window, on the same day that the club was bought by an Arab investment company, Abu Dhabi United Group. He had previously been linked with an expensive transfer to Chelsea. He emphasised his desire to play for the London club up to the eve of the transfer.

Police are investigating claims a Premier League footballer raped a teenage girl in a nightclub, it has been reported.

The footballer, who is said to be from a northern team, is alleged to have attacked the girl in the early hours of Wednesday in the two-roomed venue in Leeds, according to The Sun.

It is said he was drinking in the club with friends.

Police are reported to have seized CCTV footage from the unnamed club, which is reported to hold 800 people and be popular with Premier League players. It is thought forensics officers have carried out tests.

The girl made the claim to police on Wednesday. She is believed to have undergone tests and been interviewed by officers. The player has not been arrested or questioned about the claims.

A police source told the newspaper: "No one has been arrested and the investigation is in its early stages. We are trying to build up a picture of what has gone on.

"But obviously there is a time gap between when she says she was attacked and when she contacted us."

A spokesman for West Yorkshire Police said: "Police were made aware late on Wednesday afternoon of a report of a serious sexual assault alleged to have happened at a nightclub in Leeds. Inquiries continue."

A spokesman for the player said on Tuesday night: 'We can confirm that Robinho met the police today as pre-arranged as part of a criminal investigation.

'He strenuously denies any allegation of wrongdoing or criminality and is happy to co-operate with the police if required further.

'Rest assured he will be back training as normal and is expected to play against Newcastle.'

I suspect there'll be nowt in this. If it had been very serious it would've been reported earlier and he wouldn't have been allowed to leave the country. Hope he plays a shitter tonight though.
