GM
http://www.guardian.co.uk/world/2009/jan/27/pope-benedict-priest-holocaust-denier Pope's decision on Holocaust priest criticised * Riazat Butt, religious affairs correspondent * The Guardian, Tuesday 27 January 2009 The Holocaust Centre yesterday condemned the Pope's "indefensible" decision to revoke the excommunication of a Catholic priest who claimed that no Jews died in gas chambers during the second world war. Stephen Smith, director of the Holocaust Centre, said welcoming Richard Williamson back into the Catholic church was an insult and undermined the Vatican's pledge to tackle antisemitism. Smith, who established the centre in Nottinghamshire as a memorial and education centre and played a key part in developing the UK's Holocaust Memorial Day, said: "Whatever the politics of the Catholic church, the readmission of Williamson, who is a self-proclaimed Holocaust denier and actively endorses the Protocols of the Elders of Zion, is indefensible ... and sends out entirely the wrong message about the Vatican's commitment to tackling antisemitism." He is one of many to have criticised the Pope's desire to seek reconciliation with a traditionalist Catholic order - the Society of Saint Pius X - one of whose members is a Holocaust denier. Williamson, a British-born cleric now living in the US, claimed in a television interview that historical evidence "is hugely against six million having been deliberately gassed in gas chambers as a deliberate policy of Adolf Hitler ... I believe there were no gas chambers." Well, pardon my ignorance, I only studied this at school, but I'm fairly sure the holocaust did actually happen. The TV pictures seemed to suggest it anyway. But I mean, maybe the Catholic church is right about this, in the same way it's right about there being no child abuse in their hallowed institution, no inherent entrenched sexism or chauvinism in their moral code and belief system. How can anyone be sure there were no gas chambers? What planet are they on - or can someone show me this "historical evidence"?

DJ_NUFC
A holocaust did actually happen. Wasn't the first and unfortunatly probably won't be the last. Yup, After WWI thousands of Armenians and Greeks were killed and displaced as The Ottaman was turned into a country. Right on Europes door step and no one lifted a finger. Though the Armenian holocaust has been a successful example of denial and rewriting of history. Just go to Turkey and ask someone. Like the Viennese tour guide says to Brian in Family Guy: "Nothing bad ever happened here. Between 1939 and 1945, the whole country was on vacation!" As for the denial of the Jewish holocaust, these people really should not be even given a voice as their 'evidence' has been at best laughable and their sources as dodgy as "my great-grandfather's uncle's farmer says Auschwiz was actually a Bible Camp." How long have you been posting on here, and you still don't know that people look at the evidence, consider it, then claim what they want to be true to be true, either perverting the evidence to "back-up" their belief, or ignoring it entirely!?! Reality is dead, fantasy rules!!! Just look at the nufc forum for irrefutable proof. I'll leave it to you to decide if the above is ironic or not. 2sheds
Wow I knew the Guardian was biased but not as much as this article. Here's the original article from Reuters with the relevant part in bold:Pope rehabilitates Holocaust denier, angering Jews VATICAN CITY (Reuters) - Pope Benedict rehabilitated on Saturday a traditionalist bishop who denies the Holocaust, despite warnings from Jewish leaders that it would seriously harm Catholic-Jewish relations and foment anti-Semitism. The Vatican said the pope issued a decree lifting the excommunication of four traditionalist bishops who were thrown out of the Roman Catholic Church in 1988 for being ordained without Vatican permission. The four bishops lead the ultra-conservative Society of Saint Pius X (SSPX), which has about 600,000 members and rejected modernizations of Roman Catholic worship and doctrine. The Vatican said the excommunications were lifted after the bishops affirmed their willingness to accept Church teachings and papal authority. In healing a 20-year-old schism that had wounded the Catholic Church, the decree looks set to spark one of the most serious crises in Catholic-Jewish relations in 50 years. "We have no intention of interfering in the internal workings of the Catholic Church, however, the eagerness to bring a Holocaust denier back into the Church will cast a shadow on relations between Jews and the Catholic Church," Israel's ambassador to the Vatican Mordechai Lewy, told Reuters. One of the four bishops, the British-born Richard Williamson, has made a number of statements denying the full extent of the Nazi Holocaust of European Jews, as accepted by mainstream historians. In comments to Swedish television broadcast on Wednesday, he said "I believe there were no gas chambers" and only up to 300,000 Jews perished in Nazi concentration camps, instead of 6 million. Williamson said: "I believe that the historical evidence is hugely against 6 million having been deliberately gassed in gas chambers as a deliberate policy of Adolf Hitler." Israel-based Rabbi David Rosen, head of inter-religious affairs for the American Jewish Committee, told Reuters:. "The late Pope John Paul II called anti-Semitism a sin against God and man. The denial of the overwhelmingly detailed documentation of the Shoah is anti-Semitism at its most blatant. "In welcoming an open Holocaust denier into the Catholic Church without any recantation on his part, the Vatican has made a mockery of John Paul II's moving and impressive repudiation and condemnation of anti-Semitism," he said. VATICAN DEFENDS DECREE Asked about Williamson's comments, chief Vatican spokesman Father Federico Lombardi said they were "totally extraneous" to the lifting of the excommunications. "This act regards the lifting of the excommunications, period," Lombardi told reporters. "It has nothing to do with the personal opinions of a person, which are open to criticism, but are not pertinent to this decree." http://www.reuters.com/article/worldNews/idUSTRE50N19320090124 The Bishop in question (and the order in general) was not excommunicated because they were Holocaust Deniers, they were excommunicated because their ordinations were invalid, and they continued to act in defiance of Rome. Mine was a serious point, actually. Yeah it was a little bit piss-takey the way I said it, but I meant it. People believe what they want to believe and use any little bit of "evidence" they can find to back that up, even if it's totally outweighed by all the other evidence. If they can't find any evidence, they simply make it up. No-one's interested in reality, just their own little fantasy. The ironic thing was because I saw that someone could quite easily lay the same accusation at me for what I'd just said, and I was basically saying that I was aware of it and didn't give a shit if people thought I was being a hypocrite.
