Kieron Dyer has attempted to bring forward his latest St James's Park comeback by offering to wear protective goggles in order to take part in Newcastle's critical Premiership encounter with Sheffield United this evening.

But having feared a freak eye problem could have serious consequences for the player's vision, Glenn Roeder will take no chances with his unfortunate midfielder.

Dyer suffered the latest in a long line of injuries when he ran into a pole during a routine training ground exercise eight days ago. The incident occurred less than 48 hours after the 27-year-old made an encouraging return from a hamstring problem that had sidelined him for six months. But although Dyer's frustration is obvious, Roeder will not rush him.

"Kieron is so motivated at the moment that he has even asked me about whether there was a possibility of coming back and wearing goggles," said the United boss. "That's how keen he is to get in the team and play. But he had a very small bleed in his eye and we have to be certain that the tiny blood vessels have healed so if he gets a bump or heads the ball he doesn't do further damage.

"I don't think any of us really know how close we came to it being really, really serious and the worst case scenario does not bear thinking about. For a short time, his vision was very blurred. Thankfully, it has come back now and he is fine."

Roeder is hoping that Dyer will be back in action within two weeks but, given Newcastle's hectic schedule, that means he could still miss another four first-team fixtures.

It is a situation as frustrating for the United boss as it is for the player. But Roeder's troubles are easing and, having engineered a thrilling win at Palermo with an injury-ravaged squad, the 50-year-old hopes Scott Parker, Stephen Carr, Damien Duff and Celestine Babayaro will all be available for today's important Premiership match.

The game comes less than 48 hours after United's memorable outing at Stadio Renzo Barbera and a manager whose senior squad has been stretched to the limit in recent times is not impressed with the scheduling.

"To play Thursday, Saturday and Tuesday is madness," said Roeder, whose team will travel to Vicarage Road for a Carling Cup tie against Watford in three days' time. "It is utter madness to expect the players to keep coming out and performing at the intensity you need to win games.

"The win at Palermo can only have helped in terms of the tiredness, because you don't feel so tired when you are winning games. Hopefully this is a big turning point in our season; we have to beat Sheffield United, we have got to start winning at home."

Newcastle have not won a league match on home soil since beating Wigan on August 19. But with Roeder's team facing the prospect of dropping into the relegation zone should they lose this evening, an immediate improvement is required.

Meanwhile, Roeder has warned Bayern Munich to forget any thoughts of trying to sign Emre after reports in Germany insisted the Turkish international has emerged as a prospective replacement for the Manchester United-bound Owen Hargreaves.

Sissoko had to wear a pair for us last year, after about 15 minutes they steemed up and he couldnt see out of them, so he ended up just launching them of the bench.

If it happened last Friday, and he's out for 2 weeks, he's already missed one week, how the hell does he miss another 4 games? By that theory he should miss Watford on Tuesday and probably Man City. Or do we just double the amount of games he'll miss because it's nearer the truth?
