Favourite Sci-fi series

Thought this would be a good'un for a thread - not sure if it's been done on here before. Do we have any sci-fi buffs on here and if so, what are your favourite series?

I was spoon-fed on the excellent Star Trek TOS, as well as Blakes 7, Doctor Who and Space 1999 to name a few. All classic shows from my youth. Glad to see that Blakes 7 is gonna be remade/re-imagined with Sky being behind it, IIRC. From recent years - I'm a massive Babylon 5 fan, as well as the likes of X-Files, Lost, Heroes and Sarah Connor Chronicles. The more recent efforts seem to have re-ignited peoples' thirst for quality sci-fi.

Currently, Battlestar Galactica, just superb.  The new Terminator: The Summer Glau Sarah Conner Chronicles isn't bad at all, not doing too great in the US though so there's a chance it'll be cancelled.

All time, probably Babylon 5, though it's beginning to look slightly dated these days.  Closely followed by Firefly

I loved Star Trek when I was growing up, but in retrospect, the only one of those series' that's any good is probably DS9. I still appreciate the rich mythology created by the series though.

Galactica is pretty decent right now.

I've also got a soft spot for Doctor Who.

I like TNG and Voyager, never been able to get into DS9 though.

Thing is with Star Trek, TOS - it was so ahead of it's time. Gene Roddenberry was a true visionary. Babylon 5 had a superb story arc, which is why it still stands up (for me) even though it's more than 10 years old now.

Really enjoying Sarah Connor Chronicles - I hope they'll keep faith with it in the US. Also watching 'Fringe' at the moment, which looks promising so far.

The story goes that the guy who wrote Babylon 5 (J. Michael Straczynski) went to Paramount with an idea for a sci-fi series.  Paramount were didn't like the idea though & weren't prepared to produce the 5 year series.  J. Michael Straczynski went off to Warner Bros who liked the idea & produced it.

In the meantime, Paramout tried to come up with a new Star Trek series & basically rewrote the Babylon 5 idea into the Star Trek universe, making Deep Space 9.

One of the main producers of DS9 was Ronald D Moore who later came up with the new Battlestar Galactica format.  Considering the amount of religious & mystical elements of both DS9 & Battlestar Galactica I'd say there's a lot of his influence in both shows.

J. Michael Straczynski apparently came up with an idea for a new Star Trek spinoff, rumoured to be pretty dark & far more adult, much like the new Battlestar Galactica.  Unfortunately it probably won't be made as Paramount are more interested in family friendly pap.

Grew up watching Star Trek and Stargate, and remain addicted to those shows. Seriously think I watch an episode of either most days. DS9 and TNG in particular are class, as well as both Stargate incarnations. Love Heroes as well, cannot wait for the next volume.

Star Trek TOS, TNG, DS9... hell, I even like Voyager.

Dr Who when I was a nipper. (Lost interest after Tom Baker.) They say everyone can remember where they were when they heard Kennedy had been assassinated. I can't, but I can remember exactly where I was the next day -- watching the first episode of Dr Who. And so many people wanted to see it again they repeated it the following week, before showing episode two.

Fireball XL5 – 1960s Gerry Anderson puppet show. I've still got a book of poems I wrote when I was eight, and they're nearly all about Steve Zodiac and his co-pilot Robbie the Robot. Stingray and Thunderbirds were cool too.

The Prisoner – as much SF as an espionage series. I used to get a special dispensation to stay up late and watch this one first time around. Trapped on a mysterious island, no one knows what the fuck is going on... sound familar?

The Clangers.

Lost – pick of the current bunch, even though I'm getting a bit weary of it. Sarah Connor Chronicles feels like the franchise treading water. Stargate is crass. Battlestar Galactica is ridiculous. Fringe feels like it was written by computer, just a jumble of weary tropes and stock characters. Heroes is shallow and all over the place.

Battlestar Galactica is ridiculous.

In what way?

Dramatically, BSG is the best show on television at the moment IMO. Even better than Lost. I can't think of any other show ever that has been as depressingly brilliant to watch.
