DJ_NUFC
Anyone have one? What are advantages over a laptop? Thinking about getting this one: http://www.canadacomputers.com/index.php?do=ShowProduct&cmd=pd&pid=021447&cid=896.862.656 Although I don't know how much I'll actually miss a CD/DVD drive. I need something that's light and easy to carry. I'm split between this or a 14.1" laptop. Ideas?

KDT
on mine at the minute, they're really handy for the net and doing work on and stuff this is the one i've got http://www.currys.co.uk/martprd/store/[email protected]@@@[email protected]@@@&BV_EngineID=cccfadegidelflhcflgceggdhhmdfhk.0&page=Product&fm=null&sm=null&tm=null&sku=339569&category_oid= I do have a laptop aswell though so the lack of cd drive doesn't really bother me, if i want to transfer anything across i can just plug my external hard drive in that i have on my laptop into my netbook, so the lack of cd drive doesnt really affect me. DJ_NUFC
Sweet. My main concern is the keyboard, how is it to type on for long periods? Even the best netbook I've seen is only 92% of an actual size keyboard. I'm gonna be using it primarily for writing.
KDT
typing is no bother once you get used to it, my keyboards pretty much a similar size to a normal laptop so the netbooks fine for writing

Chrissy Bee
Easy to type on - no problems at all. The mousepads are shit though.
Dave
I really fancy one but for no particular reason other than they're new and cool. Does anyone use Linux instead of XP? How easy are they to use, how quickly do they boot etc? Is it better than XP for the basic tasks a notebook is designed for?
DJ_NUFC
I just ordered the aforementioned one. Now I'm in the post-spending-money syndrome. What if I do need the CD/DVD drive?
Adam
My 2p, I have been using it when I'm in Uni, to do essays on, or just to browse news etc when im bored in the library. Does everything a laptop would but is far easier to carry about.

Adam
http://www.hotukdeals.com/item/433200/3-three-mobile-broadband-15gb-allow/ Canny deal. So £540 total, I suppose if you use the MB then its fine, but how often would you use it ? I have one of those aspire ones they are good, but you are better off getting the newer ones, bigger screen better battery life etc.
Dave
I think I'll end up with a netbook next, doesn't seem much point in a full-sized laptop now. Be interesting to see how the butchered version of Win7 pitches up.

Be interesting to see how the butchered version of Win7 pitches up. I thought they had dropped the starter edition ? Or was it just the three app limit. I think on current netbooks, they would struggle but the new nvidia ion looks class and could probably run it with ease. I run XP on mine and its perfectly fine, I got a 9 cell battery as well. I its big but when you get 8 hours of battery life with wifi on, and watching youtube in firefox I won't complain. Also my Aspire one A150 runs games like GTA III freedom fighters RTCW flawlessly

I know it won't be anything top of the range but might go for it as just something for a bit more mobile web browsing. Mainly for when I'm on the shitter of course. mattynufc
I currently have the Acer Aspire 150, superb little thing, once I uninstalled Linux and installed Windows XP (from a USB pen, that took some doing and I have a degree in Computer Forensics!). The Linux Lite seems cool at first, until things stop working, even packages that should work tend to mess up and you have to use the recovery CD... that ofcourse you do nothave a disc drive for so have to put it onto USB pen. Anyways, I was dubious of putting XP on as it had a minimal Linux based OS on previous so I thought it may run very slow, turns out it is actually decent except when I ask it to run about 10 firefox windows and photoshop, but that should be expected with 512mb RAM. The fan is also very noisy, I installed AA Fan Contorl which works perfect however I do fear one day that my processor may blow as the laptop gets quite hot, but honestly without doing this the fan is louder then he TV. tmonkey
Obvious reasons - very small and portable (size of a typical hardback autobiography and alot thinner), battery life is alot better than a standard laptop's, cheap (relative to a good laptop that is well built). They're not bad at watching movies, but they're s*** for games (unless you play pre-2001 games or something). Not so obvious reason - it's the "In thing". Using a laptop in trendy cafes, trains, etc, just looks ridiculous now compared to these small, nifty, portable devices that do the same job but far more conveniently. A 15 inch laptop is big when you open it up, it's heavy, it's usually loud when it's working, and it's a bit of an eyesore compared to a netbook. The best value-for-money netbook at the moment (imo) is probably the Samsung NC10 (6 cell model), a 10 inch screen which I'd say is about right when wanting something small without it being too small to see or use effectively (8.9 inch is too small imo). Currently the best in terms of style, has a great keyboard, 7 hours of battery life, runs very fast, quiet and smooth (especially when upgraded to 2 gigs of Ram for about £20), sharp screen, comes with XP (which is important, as Linux is not a user-friendly OS). The main downside is the trackpad takes a bit of getting used to as it's small and there's little to no tactile response from the panel (but once you're used to it it's fine). It's currently £270 in PC World/Currys. There's a newer version, the NC110, but that's around £50 more for a 9.5 hour battery and a better touchpad, but with an ugly red border running along the middle. Video of the NC10 in white (matt - the black is in gloss): The main NC10 alternative is Asus' EEE Netbook 1000H - 7 hours battery, XP, so on and so forth. Similar performance. The trackpad is definitely better on here, but the keyboard is not as good as the NC10 (layout/ functionality and build quality), and it's just that added bit bulkier/uglier, with parts that look cheap (unlike the NC10). Performance wise it's pretty similar and slightly cheaper, although reviews suggest that the EEE netbook is definitely louder. In terms of pure aestetics though, I just dislike the bulky nature of it and in particular the Eee logo on the front. The newer 1000he has 9.5 hours of battery life (it's the NC110 equivalent), but still suffers from similar aesthetic/quality issues as the 1000h. For anyone buying a netbook, I'd say an important thing to look for is the battery life. A good 6-cell battery should give you 6/7 hours of browing/typing at a moderate screen brightness. Some of these netbooks come with 3-cell batteries, which give roughly 3 hours of life, and imo that handicaps a netbook far too much to make having one worthwhile as after a couple of hours you'll have to charge it. Upgrading a battery can cost something like £60-80 if you go for official makes (and if you go for unofficial, expect it to be lower quality and therefore lasting nowhere near as long - e.g. a generic 6-cell battery from China will probably last 3 hours). Getting a 9-cell battery (9 hours) is great, but only worth the extra cost if it's something you really need it for a full working day for example. PS The netbooks that come with mobile broadband deals tend to be 3-cell, so watch out for that.
tmonkey
I really fancy one but for no particular reason other than they're new and cool. Does anyone use Linux instead of XP? How easy are they to use, how quickly do they boot etc? Is it better than XP for the basic tasks a notebook is designed for? Linux is much faster than XP at bootup - probably 15-30 secs for Linux, 45-60 secs for XP. But it's shit for a netbook imo. Installing things in Linux can be a pain, both software and hardware (so if you attach something, e.g. an external DVD, you might simply be fucked for drivers in Linux, and even if you do find something you might still have problems). If you're used to Windows, then unless you specifically have a reason for using Linux on your netbook, it's just not worth the hassle.
mattynufc
tmonkey, good advice regarding the battery life. My netbook has a 3cell battery and I get just under 3 hours, not toomuch of a problem as generally I have access to a plug and when I don't I just put it into stand by when I am not using it and it lasts for a few hours more. Basically make sure it is a 6 cell battery or higher. Regarding the boot up time however it is not that important, people who go on about it as if it is a major issue need to worry about themselves. XP loads up in adequate time on a netbook, mine at a lower spec netbook takes no more then 60 seconds to reach the logon screen. If you cannot wait that long you must be in serious need for some porn.
Tooj
Battery life on that one isn't great but I wouldn't use it without it being plugged in more often than not anyway. Well not for that length of time.
