Ever had to grass on someone?

I feel really shitty this week. Last Friday, I overheard my boss chatting at work, and he made a very inappropriate comment about one of my colleagues. It's a smal factory, and I know both guys involved pretty well. I agonised over what to do for a few hours, but eventually reported it to HR. It seems now that he has been suspended pending an investigation, and is looking like getting the chop. I know I've technically done nothing wrong, and the guy has no-one to blame but himself if he does get the boot, but I still feel shit. It doesn't help that half of the factory has gotten wind of what's gone on and I'm now being treated like some kind of pariah. I don't think they know all the facts, and if they did, I'm pretty sure they'd think differently...  :-[

Kind of, when I was 17 I didn't give an alibi for a kid who had been my friend since the age of three.

Although I didn't have much choice due to the way the police approached me, I wouldn't have given one, and I've never regretted it.

Was definitely the right decision as he recently got in touch after about 5 or 6 years and looks to be sorting himself out.

Don't really want to run the risk of repeating it. Put it this way, it was a racial slur, and it wouldn't be out of place in American History X, and it was about the guy and his kids.

Don't feel guilty on behalf of the dickhead then.

You made the right decision.

You've done nothing wrong, why would you feel guilty over a racist?

"No, he's gone out. To get a Thai curry."

(Yeah, because that's what we eat now, whilst you're chomping on your racist carrots!)

It was a tough call at the time because I knew there'd be repercussions involved, for me as well as him, not because I didn't think it was bang out of order. I don't feel guilty about reporting what was said, or the punishment he'll get, more that every fucker in the place is looking at me as if I've done something to get him sacked, and it's making me feel like shit. It's a small place, less than 100 people over 3 shifts, and the guy involved has a lot of 'mates', including some of the other bosses. On top of that, every piece of gossip or scandal gets twisted and blown out of all proportion ridiculously fast, I just hope it all gets sorted, sooner rather than later, and the truth comes out.

On a very 'curb' style side note, I'm due to play in a four-ball with the guy on Saturday on our unofficial golf outing...  :kinnear:

Its easy for me to say, but don't let the cunts get you down. He said something that was highly inappropriate. You searched your conscience and decided to do what you thought was right. Its his own fault if he gets disciplined, not yours.

How do people know it was you who reported him? A leak in HR?

When being taken for a disciplinary meeting, you're allowed an advocate, i.e. a colleague, supervisor, union rep, or whatever, and his just happened to be a mouthy fucker who seems to be happy to tell everyone what's going on. Or at least his version of events. I know he's in bother, because another person heard it as well, and he has already been questioned, and corroborated my statement.

You probably wouldn't want to but can't you report this other guy for telling everyone?

    By rights I probably should. But it's just not worth the hassle. I plan to ride out this storm, and then keep my head down for a while...

As much as you probably don't want to hear this, you need to get it documented that it's been made public knowledge by this second person in case you have any problems in the future & it doesn't die down as you hope.  Even if you say you're not wanting anything done about it, you just want it recorded that its happened.
