Council Tax

Bastards at Sheffield City Council have charged me for my 'free' month.

My bill from April last year (when I moved) says that I will pay £710 over 10 months - May to February inclusive.

So I fully expected March and April to be my 'free' months, like most people have in Feb and March.

Why the fuck have I been charged?! Conveniently the offices are shut on Saturday. I've not received my 09/10 bill yet in the post so am I being robbed?

Consider the extra payment as making up for spongeing off the state whilst being a student.

After they abondoned rates, and the poll tax fiasco, the government gave more Autonomy, to the local councils, including more freedom to set thier council tax, but also to pay executives and councilors more,.

What happens? councilors, and executive remuneration Rockets, as our council Tax does, but services dont improve.Isnt it great to know we pay a fucking fortune so a load of local government knobs can get do next to nowt and get good pensions, at our expense.

Btw , the goverment are supposed to be looking into this, so expect another whitewash, or toothless comitee, like the one that,...examined the Bwankers.

Something that amazed me was just how tiny a proportion of a council's budget is made up of Council Tax payments, can't remember the exact figure, but it's much less than you'd ever imagine, think ours was 13% or something like that.

The answer is some form of local income tax, less central govt money and interference  and more decisions made locally - as in France

Of course then you'll get everyone bleating about "Post Code Lottery"

£100pm for a street light right outside my bedroom window and for my bin to be filled by the family across the road.

Spot on Council tax.

Consider yourself lucky. We pay twice that and have to endure heidbanger ideas about carving up the streets, putting in trams nobody wants, ruining the look and amenity of the city, cutting school services, it's all bollocks.

But then, I can't wait for the SNP loonies to try and institute a local income tax.

Scotland has a population of 5m people and 32 different local authorities.

It's beyond a fucking joke, mate.

Live in an area called Bearsden. I've just found out, having done some digging today, that we're the only flat in building that is Band D, the rest are Band B. :undecided:

I'm quite lucky, I live on my own in a flat that qualifies for the lowest band so I pay £80 a month which isn't too bad.

On the SNP's campaign for a local income tax, that has now been abandoned despite it being one of their flagship election promises.  They never had any intention of implementing this.  They new fine that by scrapping the Council Tax we'd lose our £400m annual council tax subsidy from Westminster.  They'll now turn around and say "Look at big bad Westminster stealing our money - vote yes in an independence referendum please".  What a completely childish and irresponsible approach to governance.

I'm no big fan of the Labour party but the SNP are just a shower of opportunist wankers.

That's nowt they want 300 quid off me for 2008 for my new place, I haven't even fully moved in yet. Wankers.

Not sure if you know mate but unless your living in the premises i'm pretty sure you don't have to pay the tax,  When i bought my flat i had quite a bit of work to do and the lass at the council office told me to come back when i was living there.

I predicted a date on the form and actually didn't move in until 2 month after, went back and explained and they didn't charge me for the following two month.

That was North Tyneside council, hope this helps.

I tried there, it couldn't help. :(

In fact, it was that site that told me about the other flats in my building.
