30+ year old goths and the like

I grew up in Grimsby which has a pretty big rock/metal/goth scene. Generally you'll get 17 year olds dress up in all the clothes and have the stupid hair and like the music etc. but then either get a job or go to uni and slowly ween off it and generally turn into more grounded people.

I've got no problem with that, I used to have the stupid hair, the daft clothes and listened to the overly angst riddled music.. infact from time to time I still listen to it.. but one thing I've never really understood is how people stay in this mindset;  the 28 year old with the hair down his back, the tattoos all over the place, the piercings and almost always the dead end job. When I went to these bars as a 17/18/19 year old there were always a few older ones that dressed like this and commanded a certain amount of respect from the younger ones and were considered part of the furniture of the bars, but after heading to some of the old bars and still seeing them look down on me for having my hair cut and dressing differently I can't help but feel that it's such a waste of life. In the last 5 years of my life I feel like I've progressed a tremendous amount and achieved things I never thought I would, while these people haven't moved on. Infact I got the feeling that they resented progression in life.

Has anyone else noticed this?

Yeah, I'm 26 and I see lads I went to school with who were charvers then and still are now.  I see them walking around the streets in Whitley Bay doing whatever it  is that they do, stand in metro staions, outside of off licences etc.

YOU'RE 26 FOR FUCKS SAKE YOU CAN GO TO A PUB IF YOU WANT, YOU DON'T HAVE TO STAND OUTSIDE DRINKING LIKE A KNOB TRYING TO CHAT UP 15 YEAR OLD GIRLS.

Aye there is always one paedo type weirdo that knocks about with a young group of goths. Charvas are often the same.

That's a great point. I was thinking that when I was waiting for a bus the other day as I saw a 20 something chav wander up to a bunch of schoolkid chavs.

Similar thing in the punk scene, you see alot of older punx, alot grow up to be skinheads. It seems though as soon you leave 'the scene' to start trying to look after yourself a bit, or your family, then when you go back to see a band, or a bar that everyone frequents, you're as good as cut, and you have to start from square 1 again. Its fucked up how narrow minded so many people in 'alternative cultures' tend to be.

When we were younger, the few older goths that were knocking about were the dealers.

Worst part was, the stuff they sold was utter shite, which everyone soon realised.. so they were basically hanging around kids for no reason. Weirdos.

Perhaps it was to make money out of shit gear by selling it to those who didnt know better?

Just a thought.

That's a great phrase.

Speaking of ancient goths, has anyone seen Robert Smith of The Cure recently? He's gotten all old and fat. Looks like Jo Brand doing a tribute to Heath Ledger.

Was at an English conference today, and there was a proper full on black haired, black-clothed, white make-up, painted on surprised eyebrows goth there. Fucking hell. What a weirdo.

he's been fat for years. when he was helping out with siouxsie and the banshees she would call him "fat boy" on stage even then.

I never get this 'they're different' comment. If the rest of someone's little emo-group suddenly decided not to bother dying their hair black do you think they'd carry on regardless? They're just like anyone else following a particular trend.

I rarely see any emo kids. They tend to be all scene kids today. I thought the whole silly long fringe with spikey bits would have gone out of fashion by now but obviously not.

Aye, thats what I was trying to get at. Styled to casual perfection, and all that desheveled bollocks.
