Signings confirmed for the u23 squad include Remi Savage, Cameron Ferguson and Charlie Wiggett with confirmation waited on Shaun Mavididi. We saw a huge amount of players released and seems like we're bringing in youth from other clubs to replace them. Is this just a case of bulking up the team with potential or squad fillers when the Pizza Cup takes place?

We've had a number of other players arrive like Matthew Bondswell, Reagan Thomson, Rodrigo Vilca, Niall Brookwell and Stan Flaherty but not aware of any making the step up when we've had an injury crisis - other than Anderson.

Steve Haper appointed Academy manager.

Good to see the club being creative and imaginative in it's appointments for a change

I thought that yesterday but his list of qualifications for the role are quite impressive

If they're qualified I think it's great getting people who know the club in the key roles. Peter Ramage looks like he learned the ropes in America so if he's qualified for a role within the Academy then brilliant.

Things like Shola Ameobi as a Loan Manager, however...

I think putting people in these roles who "know the club" is their biggest limitation. It's time to try people who don't know the club and get away from the failing mentality that's prevailed since the mid 80's.

It's time the academy started producing....and not just a Dummett or new Ameobi every 5 years

Hell Beardsley was qualified and look how that turned out.

That might apply to Harper.

Ramage however had been away from the club for 12 years and has been abroad before coming back. He might offer something fresh, while also knowing the club and having experience of the Academy.

Would he be employed by Chelsea or Man City?

I really don't think Harper being promoted is an egregious example of the cronyism that's rampant in football - he's been coaching for a while now, and got promoted solely and wholly because Ashley/Charnley aren't going to go and find a new Academy Director if there's someone that can be raised up. Same reason the job was available in the first place - Dawson was moved to first team coach becase Ashley/Charnley won't hunt for a new coach outside the club. It's indicative more of the "no fucks given" attitude than a wicked "jobs for the boys".

Don't know? Can he? Or is it a case that Chelsea had to rely on their academy and didn't have a choice

Has to be said, you're making a valiant attempt at shifting your original argument there.

That’s the club we are these days, any decent talent in the youth ranks will a) want to leave, b) need to leave and c) will easily be swayed to leave by any half ambitious club. We are a feeder club to develop loanees for bigger clubs and our shitty academy system is prey for any club should we actually develop anyone half decent which in itself is extremely rare.
