Haz
Theres also a drug called Colofac that sedates the bowel but makes its actions regular. Ask about it with your doc. Alinson's Coarse Bran sprinkled on your cereals and other foods (it mixes with gravy) will help in the long term. Otherwise your quack might prescribe Fybogel to bulk you up and prevent the exlosive sh its.
Mr. Snrub
I've had this before. Awful thing to have. The pain is almost unbearable.
2sheds
I've got it. The only positive thing about it is it only seems to affect me at home. The thought of having to shit my instestines out after a good slap up meal horrifies me but for some reason I only ever get it in the house. Holidays are fine aswell. Roughage is the only thing that seems to help in my case but that's because the rest of my diet is appalling. If you only eat once a day and its exactly the same meal everyday for the past decade you can't really expect anything else so I suppose.
Coco
My housemate at Uni had it pretty bad. Was a disaster for pretty much every social occasion. Every time he'd have a drink, or eat something remotely unhealthy, he'd get stomach cramps and run the risk of being out of action for the night. I think it cleared up a lot for him recently, but I haven't seen him that much, and it's not the kind of thing I'd go out of my way to bring up... pinkeye
One of my mates started to get it really badly, he has since worked out that it is onions and garlic that set him off but, while he was figuring it out he was a mess. I can remember getting a cab to heathrow together and he just said to the driver to stop on a roundabout, he jumped out, dropped his trousers and squirted everywhere, I am actually laughing now thinking about it, him hanging onto a tree in the middle of a busy road with crap squirting from his arse and people looking on in absolute horror!!! I thonk you need to spend a little time working out what your triggers are, usually it is caffine, dairy, bread or things like onions so maybe experiment with those and then try to cut the items out of your diet that trigger episodes of IBS. Good luck.
S.S.R.
Drink peppermint tea. This. IBS has a vicious circle - not just your ring - where you stress yourself over it, causing it in the first place. As well as the tea, experiment with what you're eating. See what difference it makes. If you're going to cut anything out, do it over a long period of time, so your gut has a chance to recover. Be patient. Avoid high fibre food, as In my experience it makes it worse. Best way is to have a really bland, boring diet, see if it gets better and reintroduce foods to see what you can get away with. Nearly forgot. Before you assume it's IBS, Ask your doc to check you out for Helicobacter pylori.

Before you assume it's IBS, Ask your doc to check you out for Helicobacter pylori. Aye, Ive had IBS for 8 years. Ive been checked for Gilberts, Heli, Crones and all that. Its just so annoying, and proper embarrassing at times. Im still none the wiser on what foods it is because Ive cut a lot of things: Apples, fatty food, white or wholemeal bread etc etc but the problem persists. It could very well be that I eat a canny fair few sugarfree polos, but I dont know the alternative really. Its like a choice between needing the toilet or eating the sugar ones and rotting my teeth. Haz
Years ago they called IBS "Spastic Colon" for the spasms it presented. This is almost certainly due to a lack of roughage in the diet and poor modern diet (like fried food and high carbs) If high fibre doesnt suit you then you'll need to put up with it because modern treatment is aimed at bulking the stools (fibre & roughage) to slow and strengthen peristaltic action (gut motility) A bland diet, free of fibre and roughage will make it worse - but you should only shun them if you know for certain that your body doesnt accept them. I found the coarse Bran worked better and quicker than anything because you can put it on so many foods. You can also get peppermint capsules that calm the bowel. womblemaster
FOr once i agree with a haz posting) I went to romania 4 times couple of years ago, and got some bug. DOc never sorted it out. MIght go back and hassle them again. WHolewheat bread is bad for me.......that could be an allergy though not ibs?? Peppermint tea, raw onion/garlic/leeks calms mine down. They are all natural antiseptics. MOSt of my family(dads side) have caeliacs disease, ie wheat allergy......kinda odd, as they were all farmers, but nm! if i ever drink german style wheat beer, i get the shites next morning, so guess i got same thing. Havent got around to cuttin white bread out of diet though. ALternatives all seem too expensive......so i just shite, and smell

pedro111
IBS has always puzzled me somewhat. How do you know exactly if you have got it? Surely everyone no matter who you are feels some form of bowel discomfort on a fairly regular basis dont they?

Its when its socially obtrusive that it causes problems really.
