Living/Working in the US

I am currently giving very serious thought to upping sticks and moving to Florida.

In my line of work (Geophysics) there is precious little work available in the UK, let alone N. Ireland. I have previously worked offshore in the Gulf of Mexico and there seem to be plenty of companies based in Florida who I could work for.

On top of that the cost and quality of houses there, the weather, the chance to live mortgage free and for the missus to go part time. It all seems to make sense.

Anyway, does anyone know what we need to do in terms of visas / green cards, maybe even longer term citizenship for the kids at least?

any chance you could take decky with you ?

The only realistic chance of any Geophysics work in the UK, is to join Tony, Phil, that other bearded one, and the rest of the Time Team team!

Go on. move to Florida man! Earthquakes, Hurricanes, Storms only ever seen on Jupiter. And when you retire, the village is down the road!  O0

I think work visa's are limited and they're all processed at the same point every year... and GUESS when that is? Yes. Its now. So you're probably too late for this year. However it gives u plenty of time for next year!

I will be planning to do it.. theres not much to it. Find a company that'll make the effort and take the cost of hiring you.. and you're in (has to be 'skilled' job). But it will take the company time and will cost them a few k to process, so.. have fun.

Cheer's for that dan.

This is all stuff a friend told me, his parents have a place over there and have worked there. He also has mates there. However, this is my memory of said conversation, so if either a) he's a liar or b) i'm stupid, I apologise.

This whole 'only process 1 time in the year' isn't official or anything I believe.

Oh, also, there is a national lottery thing which UK citizens aren't allowed to join.. UNLESS! ur from NI.

No idea right honourable co-poster! My ineptitude to post/quote correctly will be a factor here, as well as being a complete tosspot!

I know loads of Americans that are living and working in the UK. Seems unfair that it's much harder for us to go over there.

It should be a breeze to get in if you are a UK citizen.  Why is it not?

'Cos they're shit scared we'll go over there and use our accents to fuck all their women.

Florida/Gulf Coast is a pretty hurricane prone place to move...

I've lived in Florida 20 years now and I've only been through 8-10 hurricanes.  They really aren't all that bad unless you're within a 20-50 mile radius of the actual eye where the really bad stuff is.  You should really be fine in the Gulf Coast.

Where are you looking at moving to on the Gulf Coast?

Only 8-10? You act as though that is some insignificant amount. That's like saying Mount Vesuvius has only erupted 8-10 times during my twenty years living in Pompeii.

Wish I could help you man, but I was in a total different situation being a student and having relatives in the country. This website http://www.usimmigrationsupport.org could help you maybe.

It's pretty much what Dan B said in that you apply for a skilled job (any type of skilled job) and if it is a large company they apply for a H1B visa for you. They also carry the paperwork and make it happen. If you are in the States the British Consulate General can be surprisingly helpful.

And Aye there is the annual lottery thing.

Also you should know that there are (literally) millions of illegal immigrants working in the States at all levels of employment (not just washing dishes). I have one friend (a pompey supporter but he's okay despite that) who worked here for 8 years illegally, ended up marrying a yank and got a real work visa. If you don't care if you get caught and deported you could probably just move here and get a job by pretending to have teh right documentation... rarely does any company check and never for skilled jobs unless its gov't defense contractor work.

Ian W: It is a bitch to get a work visa in the UK as an American - no easy task. In fact I know a couple of yanks that eventually had to move to Berlin... where it is easy for yanks to get work visas.

I can't help you with information about Florida ... never been to the South, but I have seen it on TV and apparently they all own guns and vote Republican... :p

Imo it should be easier for US, UK, Canada, Australia and New Zealand citizens to move between said countries than it currently is.

hopefully the exchange rate between the GBP and $ will have improved by then. Pretty shocking now as a Brit (well in comparison to 6 months ago when  $2 was a quid!)

"In my line of work (Geophysics) there is precious little work available in the UK"

The oil business isn't doing much recruiting anywhere BB - there have been some layoffs in Houston recently but not a lot.  On the other hand experienced G&G types are still getting jobs - I'd try some of the South African oil companies (tho# I hear SASOIL has a hiring freeze right now)

To get a Green Card you either have to win a place in the lottery or have a sponsor - the easiest way is to  get a job with someone in the USA , get over there on a Work Permit, pay your taxes and have a kid born there to boost your points when it comes time to try and convert to a Green Card - which took me three years..........

Most oil companies in the USA are based in Houston not Florida and there is a very big difference take it from me

What's your experience level?  and your degree??

PM if you like
