Wrong body cremated after crash

An investigation is under way after the wrong body was cremated after three women died in a car crash in Spain.

Heather Brierly, 59, and Ruth Robson, 76, from Ridley Mill, Stocksfield, Northumberland, and Julie Walsh, 58, from Somerset, died on 3 March.

A cremation service for Ms Brierly was held in Northumberland on 23 March.

But Northumbria Police said it was not Ms Brierly's body at the service and are trying to confirm the identity of the body that was cremated.

Det Ch Insp Paul Young, from Northumbria Police, said: "At the request of HM Coroner for Northumberland we were asked to clarify a number of issues in connection with the identification of three women.

'Distressing time'

"Our role has been to assist the coroner in his enquiries.

"We are now satisfied that the body of Ruth Robson is correctly interred at St Andrew's Cemetery in Hexham.

"We are also satisfied that the body of Heather Brierly has been correctly identified.

"Further enquiries are being conducted on behalf of the coroner to confirm the identity of the woman who was cremated on 23 March."

The three women's hire car was involved in a double collision near the town of Cordoba, in southern Spain.

Det Ch Insp Young said: "This is a distressing time for the families of the women involved and we wish to respect their privacy.

"A number of recommendations will be submitted to the coroner in respect of future identification of bodies repatriated to the United Kingdom."

:-[ Feel sorry for the family of the deceased. Must be horrendous.
