This is very strange, but i think it is a very ineresting system that the US are using and one we should implement.

I think our system is far superior: They get arrested, released and put on a register and if they re-offend they're back in.

It's been said on this that it's something you're born with, like being gay or straight.. if thats the case then surely you can't cure it. These people are criminals primarily in my eyes and should be treated as such - this place they're in is more like a shopping centre.

Is this sarcasm?

No.

With out system they're treated like criminals because that's what they are. I'd rather have that than have a cushy centre for them all to live in that'll cost thousands in taxes.. the patients get called by their last names and don't even have to undergo any kind of  therapy for christ sake.

Our system is flawed don't get me wrong, but in my opinion it is still better than that.

There are a load of fundamental philosophical questions about motivation for crimes and to what extent people should be punished or treated for their actions.

These questions are always brought into focus when we're talking about paedophiles.

I mean, isn't a human being a result of nature combined with nurture? And we know we aren't always 100% in control of our actions, or our desires/preferences. The question of why some people from certain backgrounds end up as criminals, and some others don't, is a very complex one.

It feels wrong to even type it, but it's too simple just to say these people are 'evil monsters'.

As for the comfort of the centre, technically they have all already served their sentences and so if they weren't there they would be released. It's not fair to say that they should have no amenities in the same way as serving convicts.

Thing is, this lot have served their jail terms for the crimes of which they were convicted. Theoretically they should be free men, hence it not being a similar environment to a prison, rather a half-way house.

You're absolutely right, but the problem I have with the whole thing is the fact that they can just decline the treatment if they really want to and just stay in that place for the rest of their lives. I understand why their system is like that since it's not on the same level as a prison and so they are considered clients, not inmates, and are called by their last names etc... but I think that for something as serious as this there really should be exceptions.

I found it interesting that some of the patients outright refused treatment and some explored other areas to cut out these urges - such as castration.
