What to do in Newcastle?

I'm on my way over this weekend for a wee trip, taking in the Pompey game on Monday night. It's my bro's birthday on Sunday, so I'm bringing him along. The last thing I want to do is sit about in the bar for 4 days, so I could do with some expert local knowledge as to where's good to go, and what stuff we can do in town over the weekend.

Whereabouts you staying roughly? If you have the capability, maybe look into the more rural areas of Northumberland, spending some time in Durham. In Newcastle, there are plenty of good bars/restuarants as you probably expect, Northumberland Street/Metro Centre if you want to shop about. Depends on your capabilities mate, financial and otherwise.

Would recommend going up the Northumberland coast but you'd need to rent a car ideally.

Tynemouth is alreet though and can be reached on the metro. Get some fish n chips down Shields fish quay n all.

Flying in on Saturday, and staying in the city centre (New Bridge street I think...). Won't be renting a car, so will have to rely on public transport. Would like to see a bit more than just the nightlife in and around the city centre. Probably start off just taking a dander around on Saturday and getting my bearings. It'll be my first trip to SJP, and it's his 30th, so within reason, money isn't an issue.

train to hexham is an idea. in newcastle itself the quayside is quite pleasant and there are one or two museams and galleries. segedunum and bedes world aren't too far from the metro. tynemouth is worth a look for the priory.

next time rent a car and i'll keep you going for a week.

Not a particular lot to see in Hexham like but you can do a decent day stopping off in all the pubs along the route if its a nice day...

Wylam - Boathouse

Prudhoe - Adam & Eve

Riding Mill - Welly

Corbridge - Dyvels

we do a similar trek in the summer. do all the corbridge pubs then into ovingham, then the boat house, ending in either the town or keelman if warm.

Definitely a few nice pubs in the Tyne Valley particular if its a nice day. Prudhoe is fairly horrendous for a town of its size luckily Wylam and Ovingham have a couple of nice places.

If the weather is decent on sunday morning, have a wander up the quayside to the Ouseburn Valley, good walk up to Jesmond Dene & you can do the Sage/Baltic on the way

Over in the hotel lobby now. Loving it so far. Down Quayside this morning, lovely weather, good craic. Resting up, and heading out later on. Probably going to end up in Bigg market tonight, will be an experience no doubt...

Gonna hijack this for myself.

Any ideas for countryside style walks around Northumbria for tomorrow? I'm not completely familiar with the area so anything from hills, parks, etc. would be appreciated.

how far a walk are you thinking of ?

kids or just adults ?
