Big Geordie
Think I might have a major problem with my 2ltr Mondeo (X-Reg 2000) Noticed a strange smell coming from the engine, just before. Popped the bonnet when I got home - water level was a little down (so I filled it back up) - checked the oil and it looked a kind of runny brown colour, as opposed to what it should be. I'm concerned that the cylinder head gasket has gone and that means major problems if it has. Do we have any mechanics on here who could offer some advice, please? pedro111
Im not a mechanic but it sounds like you are up shit creek without a paddle mate. Nasty problem.
Dr. TC
Same thing happened to my rover metro - yeah, sounds like a head gasket. By the end I had to fill up the coolant every time I drove it as it would run dry every journey. I got quotes of £400 - £600 to fix it, but they also advised me it wasn't worth it. Sold it for £150 instead.
Big Geordie
Gonna get two opinions over the next couple of days. One off a garage that I've used before and also off a good mate of mine who's a magician when it comes to cars. Hoping he can sort it for me, as it'll cost a lot less. Guest lankybellwipe
Yep, 3 out of 3 my mams is fucked - gasket. leaving brown oil/water sludge on the road, and in the bottle (quite a bad leak) you're always advised not to bother fixing it get shot BG! Sorry
Big Geordie
Wish it was as easy to get shot of it. Took a loan out to buy it, and it's still got two years left until it's paid off.

cp40
is there any creamy stuff in dipstick, or round oil cap? a low water level can make some nasty smells from the hoses, without any bad damage like.
Big Geordie
Didn't notice any, cp40. The oil that was on the dipstick was sort of a chocolatey-brown colour - looked different to what it should be.

Guest Stephen927
I googled and got this information: Maybe I'm mis-understanding, but if you see coolant leaking from the waterpump, I would pressure test it and pinpoint the leak and fix that first, Oil seapage isn't necessarily abnormal. To Answer your question, typical symptoms of a blown headgasket MAY include: -bubbles of air coming up into your radiator (remove cap before starting) -leaking radiator -milkshake colored oil -overheating -rough running -coolant or oil running from head -spark plug(s) that have a green tint (if green coolant). -white colored or sweet smelling exhaust. I emphasize "may" include one or more of these symptoms. http://wiki.answers.com/Q/What_are_the_signs_of_a_blown_head_gasket
cp40
ive had head gasket problems before. i think the usual symptoms, are. emulsified water,( looks like mayonaise) around dipstick/ oil cap. engine running hot/ over heating, loss power. oil on surface of water in filler bottle, bubbling in the water of the filler bottle. Big Geordie
Had the car checked out this pm, and fortunately, it's fine. My mate checked the oil and underneath the oil cap and no problems. :-)
