GG
Basically, I want to try and bulk up. I'm not sure what the best way to approach this is. I'm a skinny little shit and am incredibly weak generally. I don't have any weights at home or anything and am wondering about what sort of thing I should get? I use the (rather good) school gym during free time (a couple of hours a week) but rarely do any weights, because I lift so little it's embarassing, as the gym usually ends up being competitive as soon as anyone climbs onto the bench press. So all I do is a bit of cardio/rowing machine work, plus a bit of the machiney shings, but I don't do them as much. Personally, I'd rather do some stuff at home myself, as I can do it as soon as I wake up and after/before I've done my morning run. Any general advice? Sort of stuff to eat (considering I'm veggie), whether to do less cardio? What sort of weights and exercises would you recommend me?

Now the easiest way to get that is in meats and fish like Tuna. But if you are a veggie you should try things like Maxi Muscle and other protein drinks and start lifting weights. pedro111
You've basically got no chance of bulking up if you are a veggie. You need meat and lots of it. Anyhow there was a thread just a couple of weeks ago that you should read: http://www.newcastle-online.org/nufcforum/index.php/topic,60387.0.html
Guest LucaAltieri
Nuts are great for protein too... particularly almonds. In terms of exercise, try doing something more enjoyable... martial arts, boxing, that kind of thing... you need to ache and sweat to build muscle. If it's enjoyable and competitive then you're more likely to stick at it and keep up longer sessions from a psychological stand point. Swimming is also fairly good and less strenuous on the joints, etc however it is less competitive and less enjoyable (in my opinion).
Dave
How/where would one do boxing as a form of exercise?

pedro111
How/where can one do boxing as a form of exercise? Boxing Gym? , there was one in Battle Hill that used to do that Boxercise thing iirc. Guest LucaAltieri
How/where can one do boxing as a form of exercise? Anywhere. There's boxing and martial arts clubs everywhere. ^^^ Luca, he wants to bulk up, doing cardio activities wont help one bit. Have you ever tried circuit training? Trust me, if you're a weedy bastard you bulk up pretty quick. Boxing is obviously great for the arms and shoulders particularly.

Yeah I think there are classes you can attend where the trainers punish you in the gym then make you put a bin bag on and go for a fuck off massive long run. Beren
Press-ups will help your strength [do one more two more a day than you did the day before], then once you're ready, curl those weights. Eat smaller meals, more frequently, not two/three big fuck-off meals a day.

What I meant was swimming, running etc while excellent, wont help him bulk up.
pedro111
I agree with ankdh, press ups and pull ups are great. Especially pull ups. If you have never done them before you will realise straight away just how weak you are when you attempt a pull up. It can take litterally months to be able to do 5 proper full extension pull ups if you are starting from nothing.

GM
Beer, shit food, no exercise. Bulks up your stomach nicely, I know that much. Yup. I can vouch for that too. Add in plenty of couch potatoes - preferably deep fried with cheese.

My advice would be to check your metabolism, and how often you go to the toilet. If you have a fast metabolism and go to the toilet regularly then youre fighting a losing battle, in my experience you'll be able to turn what you have to muscle but wont be able to add much unless your metabolism reacts differently to food. If youre the type that eats fatty food and stays thin then youre likely to stay that whey....
McCormick
You can get adjustable weight sets from any sports store ( i saw a really comprehensive one down at JJBs for £40) and I'm sure there are veggie-friendly protein supplements on the market that you can take. I know you're a young bloke, so perhaps hitting the gym super-hard at the moment may not be an especially great idea seeing as studies show that extensive exercises can stunt growth, but surely if you don't put any unnecessary pressure on your back and keep working the arms (shoulders and tricepts especially) as well as your lats you should end up being broader than you are right now; which i suspect is what you're aiming for.
