daughter wants to input XP code number and play mario with other people or something.

 

Has anybody else done this and does it all work properly etc

Yeah - you just connect it to a wireless network, it gives you a "Friend code" for each game and you either play against randoms, just people you've given your friend code to (and who've added you as well) or a mixture of both.  Out of the three consoles the Wii's system is both the most limited in terms of functionality and the most family friendly, which is kind of connected.  Hardly any games have voice chat and those that do only allow people you've given your friend code to to chat to you, so you don't get obnoxious teenagers swearing at you like you do on things like xbox live, plus you don't have to pay any subscriptions like on the Xbox 360.  In fact there's very little interaction during games save for actually playing against each other.

 

Outside of games, in the wii menu, you can also add friends who can send you messages much like emails as well.
