indeed.

loving windows 7, hate vista

although I was starting to warm up to vista until I had to build 14 machines using vista business in a domain environment with UAC enabled.

I have'nt tried windows 7 with games yet, only using it on my work machine.

although from beta1 to RC of windows 7 it seems they added in some newfeatures that broke some stuff.

What's so good about 7 compared to Vista/XP? Don't know much about it myself.

so far it seems to be much quicker and more stable than Vista

Xp is still good but its old.

Loving it so far.

Installed it on a laptop yesterday, doesn't have the 1gb RAM required to run but it's installed and running pretty well.  Also managed to get it installed on a laptop at work too, that only has 512mb RAM and struggled to install Windows 98 yet Windows 7 went on without complaints and runs MS Outlook better than XP.

I never hated Vista, I just never needed it myself but Windows 7 is fantastic so far and I'll probably have to upgrade my main PC from XP when it comes out at retail.

Yeah, it has to be much less of a resource hog that Vista because it has to run on netbooks. Microsoft are desperate to stop selling XP, but can't consider conceding the low-end netbook market to Linux. I wonder how they intend to hobble the netbook version of Windows 7.

Is it stable then? Not really keen on having an OS that is in the beta stage.

The most basic version of Windows 7, the one that will probably be sold on netbooks, will only allow you to run 3 programmes at the same time (not including anti-virus, etc.).  So you can run a web browser, your email programme and one other programme before you hit the limit.

It's still a release candidate rather than the final code, but it's been very stable for me so far.

I've just been reading in pc format that the gaming performance under 7 is slightly less (fps) than in vista.

I don't take too much notice of their benchmarks but i think i'll wait.

I don't think that either nVidia or ATI have released full Windows 7 drivers as yet so whilst the Vista drivers will probably work OK they won't be optimised as yet for Windows 7 in the same way they are for Vista and XP.

Aye, i see that. From a gaming point of view though i don't see any point in upgrading.

Don't get me wrong, i've heard nowt but praise for win7 but i get that unneriving feeling of hang on to your cash until the bugs are sorted out and until dx11 is fully implemented.

Same old story really, you spend an effing fortune on upgrades only to find you need a new gfx card because it has a new shader.

Damn them all to hell

generally the rule of thumb for gamers with new o/s's is wait until the 1st service pack and then start judging

Wow. That's pretty hobbled.

What are the chances of me installing (and running it properly) on a laptop with:

1.6Ghz Celeron with 1MB L2 cache, 400MHz FSB.

512MB 533MHz DDR2 SDRAM.

40GB 5400rpm HDD.

?

I'm running XP currently and like its simplicity, but the laptop is as slow as a dog these days and could do with a format.

Installed this last night and must admit I really do prefer it to Vista. Seems to run so much smoother and without taking up as much resources. I won't be going back to Vista that's for certain.

All you can do is try it Dave, I doubt many people will have the same spec exactly.  From what I'm reading it's meant to be generally more efficient so worth a go.

Aye, I've done a bit of Googling and everyone's saying it's far better for older machines than Vista. Gonna give it a go when the new RAM comes; I've ordered 2GB for it.
