hey guys, having this problem a lot lately,

at start up and also when i go back to my desktop the icons are either are default windows file icons and take a while to change back or disappeared completely then take a while to re-appear?

I'm running XP sp3, I've got AVG 8 and windows defender and also tried various programs such as adaware, super anti-spyware, etc.

i'v disabled all start up processes that i don't need but problem still exists (also worth a mention they are all just shortcuts, not large files)

cheers

Try a defrag.

Also run ccleaner before you defrag the drive.

It's usually symptomatic of either h.d needs defragging, or h.d is full (virtual memory) problems.

If it's especially bad after closing apps/games i would delete any stuff you don't need, run ccleaner then degfragment the drive.

Aye, it's a bottleneck created by the memory not being able to empty itself because the h.d is working much harder to read programs that are required by startup kind of.

I would get rid of all of your spyware tools. If you need to scan then use malware bytes. link http://www.newcastle-online.org/nufcforum/index.php/topic,19087.0.html

None of the others are worth much really. Malware bytes and a squared are worth shelling out if you felt the need for active scanning.

If you can run msconfig and do a successful defrag then you probably don't need active scanning anyway, you wouldn't be clicking on .exe's you know could be dodgy. O0
