davy_fulla
I'm looking to take the missus and the bairn up to the Lakes next month for a nice relaxing break. I'm just wondering whether anyone can recommend which areas are the best to stay or avoid. Also if anyone has any specific names of sites to stay at that would be spot on. I'm looking to book a lodge/chalet for 3 or 4 nights. I also don't want to be stuck in the middle of nowhere and a nice local boozer would be handy. Cheers folks! Jimburst
Windemere is nice, Bowness is a nice town on the edge of the lake with some really nice B&B's, eateries and places to rent boats etc. Keswick is also a lovely town.

biggs
Ambleside is a good place to stay and Ullswater too .
madras
Keswick at the top of Derwent Water if you've got any interest in climbing hills or mountains. Ambleside at the top of Windermere for all other reasons. Depends what you want, really.. there's a huge difference between North (big mountains all round, smaller lakes in general - Ullswater excepted - and more dramatic scenery) and South (big lakes, fewer mountains, more scenic scenery). Ambleside is the nicest town in the lakes (IMO), and is happily situated right between the North and the South, and just ten or fifteen minutes' drive from Great Langdale, the most spectacular of the valleys (again, IMO). i'll second keswick. always a more real town than amblesides daffodily twee touristy stuff, if you want to get away up by bassenthwaite is gorgeous. La Parka
Keswick was class when we went. We found a nice pub, and spend the daytime walking in the hills/lakes.

kingkerouac
The western part of the Lake District is OK. Whitehaven has a quite interesting history. But Ennerdale Water is a pretty sparse experience. Coniston is good, Keswick town good but touristy - same goes for Ambleside and Windermere. Buttermere, Ullswater etc all interesting too. Avoid places like Workington, Maryport and Cleator Moor
madras
absolutly astounded there hasn't been a "leazes" or "exhibition park" nomination yet.

cp40
Pubquiztastic. That'd be Bassenthwaite, next to Skiddaw. Think I'll head over there this weekend and attempt the huge circuit (for the walkers: Pike O'Blisco, Crinkle Crags, Bowfell, Esk Pike, Rossett Pike, Langdale Pikes, Pavey Ark, Sergeant Man) that I planned a couple of weeks ago but was stymied by some idiot parking in front of my garage until half past one in the afternoon >_< how far is that then?
